Ultimate Spyderco EDC: Just another opinion.

From someone who's owned Spydercos since they first appeared, here's my idea of the ultimate EDC. Simply put:

Endura 4 with the G-10 handle and a ZDP-189 blade with the flat saber grind.

The flat grind on the current G-10 model is just too delicate for me. If you're going to make a knife with such a wonderfully reinforced handle, it would be nice if the blade matched, in both grade of steel as well as blade geometry.

I would be satisfied with an Endura with a G-10 handle and a flat saber ground blade made of VG-10, which is truly excellent steel, but as long as I'm dreaming, might as well dream of the best.

I've been using a ZDP Delica at work cutting fiberglass strapping and very heavy cardboard and the steel holds up better than anything I've ever used.

I find this somewhat amusing, as I paid Tom Krein to turn my saber grind ZDP Endura into a flat grind cutting monster. I personally have felt from the beginning that the flat saber grind simply does not show the steel to its advantage. As for the flat ground blade seeming delicate, I have only broken one flat ground blade. It was many years ago, before Spyderco was making knives, when I was cutting insulation off a pipe and didn't know I had slid the blade under a pipe hanger clamp. Just so you will know, I've broken a couple of crowbars as well.

The good news is, I have seen pictures of a blade swap done from a D4W to a G-10 handle, which means you could probably buy both a G-10 Endura and a ZDP Endura, swap the blades and lockbars, and have your dream knife to keep and a flat ground FRN Endura to sell me. :D

I've been carrying a D'Allaura with a plain blade of VG-10.
I think it's the greatest folder I have ever held or carried.
It is so confortable in the hand it is scary.
I don't know why Sal is not going to make them anymore.

I love the D'Allara in my EDC rotation, but my Delica 4 in ZDP-189 is so fine that I've ordered another to put back so I can move this one into my EDC rotation. That's 4 knives in my EDC rotation now (2 Spydies and 2 Kershaws). It's getting kind of crowded, plus I have an Endura 4 in ZDP-189 on the way along with thinking more every day about a Manix so it just might get even more crowded...:D

The more Spydercos I acquire and use, the more I want! ;)

Ray :)

I find it pretty amusing that someone finds the G10 endura blade to be "delicate". But then again, people will pay good money to put a loud fart pipe on a stock 4 cylinder rice burner and believe they have Speed Racer. So I guess it is all about perceptions.

But dude I need a 4 inch muffler for the 1 inch pipe on my Civic.

I love my Mule. It is so damn skinny and now that I have a nice wrap comfy as well. I actually have it in the pocket of my sweats right now.

Fixed blades rule.

I have had my eye on a Polliwog on a nice silver chain worn as jewellery.

I find this somewhat amusing, as I've been eyeing my ZDP Endura and G-10 handled Endura and contemplating just that. Do you really want to buy the resulting delicate FRN Endura?

I like the Dodo, I wish Spyderco would consider sprint runs of the Dodo with different steels and handle materials.

That's interesting. After putting my Dodo away for a while, I took it to work today. It felt good to have it in my pocket again. Truly an brilliant design and nothing delicate about it.

it's like tissue paper, zen. you can't even get that sh...er, stuff wet, falls right apart. because of this I've used gaffer's tape to strap popsicle sticks to the outside of all my knives with FRN scales that don't have liners.

You aren't allowed to sell it on here without a Gold membership or higher. But, yes, I would buy it. ;)
