ultimate survival knife?

What about a different approach.
Heavy duty; a small hatchet (preferably Gränsforsbruks or Hultafors)
The rest; a small flat ground fixed blade (i.e. Spyderco F. Perrin) or SAK (i.e. Hercules)??

Bigcountry, there are so many great "survival knives" out there, that it comes down to...price, preference and how long your willing to wait. If it's possible, try to handle as many of the blades suggested as you can. My $.02 .

Just wanted to thank all you guys for the great advice. I'm going to take everyones advice into consideration and find out what works the best for me. Once again thank you!

During my (European, thus I guess less challenging than American, Russian, African, Australian survivals as we don't have vast deserts, rainforest and extremely remote mountain ranges) survival trips over a decade, I've found out that the ideal survival knife must meet the following requirements:

Great cutter/slicer
Relatively light (less than 200 grams if possible - 6.8 oz)
Solid yet easy to sharpen with a small sharpening stone
Good grip
Weather/preferably rust resistant
Good balance
Blade length around 10 cm (4")

So apart from my Victorinox Huntsman or Outrider, my choice is Fällkniven F1 or S1. The only issue I'm having is that F1's edge retention could be a bit better so I am looking for a Dozier right now.

I had used the $40 Ontario 499 knife (pilot-issue) for over 10 years and liked it a lot. The grip was great for me (unless it was wet) and I had to keep it dry b/c it's 1095 steel. I really liked the spine rasp and hex-butt b/c I'd use it as a hammer, of sorts for hammering tents stakes in the ground, etc.

There have already been a couple of votes for the SOG SEAL Knife. But I really like having a spine rasp and somewhat shorter blade so, I've recently chosen the $65 SOG SEAL Pup Elite and am pleased with it. The AUS 8 blade's a bit shorter than my Ontario (this one is 4.85 in) but like I mentioned before, I like a shorter fixed blade. It's pretty light yet balanced and the knife has very strong feel to it. The grip is just amazing, with deep finger grooves.
