Heres the short version. Knowing that tomorrow you would be dropped in an undisclosed remote location, for an undisclosed amount of time, lets say...... the southern appalachions(sp), with up to three edged tools(but no more) and the clothes on your back, during this time of year (fall), what would your choices be.
I guess we could consider it in two ways: The DEPTHS OF IMAGINATION catagory and the: REALITY-HERES 200 BUCKS GOOD LUCK catagory:D (you know; the one most of us are probably in;) !

I guess my ideal money-no object choices would be the same as my regular ones, except I would want full customizations and the inclusion of a Dave Beck W.S.K.

-tomahawk (traditional)
-Beck W.S.K.
-a 3--4" smaller fixed blade, probably the companion of the wsk that you see on the website, or maybe one from tops. http://www.topsknives.com/products_pages/productdetail/seawolfe.html something along theses lines, I guess

REALITY PICKS

-Cold Steel trail hawk
-Gerber gator fixed drop point

My WWII Khukuri would go, as would my Becker BK-7 and it's mini survival kit, water purification tabs and cordage/shelter that are included on and in the sheath. I'd also include my German military issue field knife. The small blade and saw would be very useful.

It's good to know when I'll be leaving. That way I can layer up the clothes, fill the pockets with all kinds of goodies and sneak my bedroll in under my poncho. :p

Right now, I think I'd want:

1 - A Gransfors Bruks Axe

(I have a Wildlife hatchet, but if I had warning and KNEW I was gona need one, I'd probably want a bigger one. The hatchet is nice when it's PART of a big kit, but if it's one of only THREE items I'm allowed then a larger one wouldn't be much of a weight concern.)

2 - Fallkniven F1 (Micarta)

(I don't have this one currently, but it looks like it might be 'just right')

3 - Victorinox SwissTool X

(For everything else)

I think that should do pretty well (toolwise, at least).

1 Kabar Machete Cutlass
2 Cold Steel Recon Scout
3 Leatherman wave
or some of my others
1 Kukri
2 Strider MSC
3 Lone Wolf Harsey Tactical
These are the knives that I currently own and they would be what I would have at any given time.

I'd carry what I took with me on my last camping trip...

My Dave Beck W.S.K.

Tramontina machete with 10" blade

Small fixed blade by Gene Ingram

The one item that proved itself on my trip was my Laplander folding saw. After chopping up wood with my machete for about an hour, I decided to try out the saw. Holy cr@p! I ended up cutting up an entire maple tree for firewood and the powder coat never even wore off!

I'm impressed and from now on, that Laplander is going with me everywhere. I'm contemplating having Survival Sheath Systems make me a shoulder rig for my WSK and that saw.

J.M. Place Handmade Knives...

– Swisstool

- Ontario 18” D–guard machete w/ GI hard plastic sheath.

- Corona pruning saw.

Plus a Nicholson coarse metal file and a DMT coarse/extra coarse hone for sharpening.

-I would choose the saami knife from Strømeng with 8 inch blade. Excellent overall knife.
-My modified Helle Skarping.
-Leatherman supertool.

Cold Steel Voyager X2

ATC Vietnam Hawk

Gryphon M 30

Robert,

Just curious; Why did you choose to switch from the Gryphon Bowie in the Forest to the Ka-Bar in the Jungle? The switch from Axe to Machete is pretty obvious, but it seems that the Gryphon and the Ka-Bar are functionally very similar and in fact the Gryphon might be better in the Jungle because it's Stainless and Rubber.

Bear in mind I have never even seen a Gryphon in person so I'm just 'talkin theory'...

I'm not criticizing, just wonderin'.

Thanks,

-John

I would be more likely to use the heavier spine in the hardwoods if I have to use the Gryphon improperly as an axe or do all blade. The kabar is lighter, and less of a blow if I lose it, which people are apt to do in the jungle. I used a kabar in Panama more as a task knife. The machete does 90% of jungle chores, with the SAK for anything else. But when you have room for an extra blade or a good belt knife, you might as well strap the kabar on for backup or emergency. I've been carrying kabars since 89, they just seem to grow on me like a good pistol or a pack around rifle. I just recently discovered the Gryphon, and it does a great job as a large all purpose knife.

I normaly carry
Chris Reeves Shadow 1 (9in blade)
Al Mar SERE 2000
Leatherman Wave

If I had advanced notice I would likely trade the Shadow for a GB Axe.

Using the $200 limit.
Hardware store Axe (perhaps an Eastwig)
Al Mar SERE 2000
Leatherman Wave
I would also load my pockets to include among other things a DMT Duo Fold sharpener and a Fire Steele.

The ultimate knife is of course the one you have with you. In my case, that's a large Sebenza and a Leatherman PSK2. In my daypack is a Randall 15 with a Swisschamp in the pouch on the sheath.

If I were packing ahead of time or under $200,
Tramontia machete-$6
Small knife-Gene Ingram about $125, Allan Blade $60, could also be a folder though
Some type of small bow saw saw and an extra blade, probably under $30 at the hardware store

My rational: The small knife will do everyday work, skinning, etc. The bow saw and machete will do shelter making, firewood, etc. I don't like the idea of an axe because they are heavy in comparison to the saw/machete, and much easier to have an accident with (skip that axe blade off target and into a foot or leg, and survival just got a lot harder).

I wont go into the other gear I would like to have along but my three edges would be a Simonich Raven,SAK,and a Gerber hatchet. Those three will do anything from skinnin to building a small cabin.Having the ability to hammer is very useful thus the hatchet. The next most important item to have would be a cook pot.

I am thinking 1.Leatherman Wave
2. AirKat Apache
3. BK&T Tac Tool

Let me get some input from you survival, woodsmen, hiker type...How come I am not seeing anyone choosing the Hoods Woods "ATAX" ???Take a look

Actually no, not if I was restricted to blades. Normally NY would get the dual Glocks and a bunch of mags. But if it was just blades, the Vietnam hawk would be great for NYC. Think of it in the subway. Perfect close in weapon, nice tight arcs and hooks. You could wear a hawk and knife, with a back up knife concealed no problem.

Robert H,

Another question for you;

I have a Vic Trailmaster which I like a lot. How does the Workchamp compare size-wise? It's obviously considerably bigger, but does it still feel good in hand? I have large hands and I think I could tollerate a SAK a bit thicker than the Trailmaster, but I imagine the Workchamp to be HUGE! Am I over-estimating it?

Thanks,

-John

Puukko/Leuku Combonation and a folding saw. Weights 21 oz. and costs only $120 from Ragnar with a diamond sharpener.
