Hi Everyone,

Spyderco is interested in getting some feedback from those of you who purchased the experimental run of Ultra Fine Triangles for your Sharpmakers.

So you've got them, you've tried them out, what do you think?

Speaking for myself, my only critique is that the colour of the Ultra Fine triangles is too close to that of the Fine triangles. It would be easy to get them confused/mixed up. If technically possible, I would like to see the Ultra Fines in a different distinct colour.

Well Carlos, I just ordered mine this morning, so I'll get back to this thread the first part of next week. I can't wait to give them a whirl.

As far as the color distinction, Patty said they have been marking the ends with red. She also said they feel much more glassy than the fine stones. I figured they would be more translucent than the fine stones, given their high grit rating. But they aren't according to her. I might put a rubber band around the top of them if I find I'm having trouble keeping the fines and ultra fines differentiated.

Ordered my 204UF stones yesterday (should ship today) and I will post some feedback as well. Will have my diamond stones tomorrow (2/01/02) along with my Fred Perrin FB and will throw in my thoughts on those items as well (in a relevant post of course).

Hi Wire Edge,

I guess mine slipped through, since they don't have the red ends. Others have commented on the other forum that theirs did come marked.

Looking forward to your comments guys.

Hi Thomas,

The ultra fine stones aren't on the website. They are an experimental run available only through SFO for a limited time. Once we hear back from forumites Spyderco will decide whether to make them a regular item.

Got mine yesterday. The only way I can distinguish is the color on the ends. That is fine with me as long as it doesn't come off.

I sharpened my 710 with them. Wow!!!! Talk about hair popping sharp. I touched the edge to see how sharp it was and me thumb slid down the blade. Didn't hurt, but I bled on my knife. You can really get a razor edge with these stones. I hope they become a permanent addition to the line-up.

Not to tread on a moderator's territory, but both the diamond and ultra-fine rods can be found and ordered from spyderco.com.

The UFs are:

The diamonds are:

Personally, I'm not sure if I'll be picking up the Diamond rods or not. I would like to have them, but I don't have a particularly strong need for them, at this time. And since they're in the catalog, I'm sure they'll be around for a while longer.

I received my ultra fine rods today. Mine too where the same color as the fine rods with one end red. I sharpened three knives so far and I really like the results. An excellent addition to the sharpmaker.

This is mentioned in another thread by Shootist16, but I am also interested in the corresponding grit of the different rods.

I do need a pair of new glasses... !:o

Are they to be expected to be of the same fit and finish as the proposed finished product, if it is released?

Well, I'll be... ;)

Thomas: My ultra fine stones are the same level of "fit and finish" as my other Sharpmaker triangles.

As far as fit and finish goes, one of my ultra's has a series of dents along the edge opposite the grooved side. Not a real big deal, I've just been using the other two edges on that rod. I believe Sal mentioned in the video that the white stones really won't wear much, if at all, so that's not an issue.

Guys, you had me order the ultra fine stones too! :D

With shipment (international) to Sweden, the bill ended up at $50.90 !

I received my Ultra Fine rods today. Although they appear no different than the fine rods, they do feel much smoother, and came with painted red ends.

I sharpened several steel types: AUS-8, 440A, and S90V. All responded very well, but the S90V really came to life. This is possibly the sharpest I have ever got a knife! Hairs flew, newspapers parted, and cardboard shuddered in the corner.

Sharpening with the Ultra Fines is a nice experience. They are so nice and slick, that you can really pay attention to holding the correct angle (perpendicular to base in the Sharpmakers case). They are a breeze to use, and I feel they will render my loaded strop useless.

I hope these come into play for the 2002 model year. They really are a God send.

I have had mine for about a week, and never got around to having anything to sharpen. Just up and decided to put a new edge on my utility knife- used fine, and then only several strokes on the UF and I was looking for something more worthy than hair for this incredible edge!

Havent convinced myself to get the diamond rods though.

Got my UF stones today they are awesome, I have no hair on my arms and 2,000,000 paper cuts from all of my knives.

Thanks spyderco again!

If I had to pick between my fine and my ultrafine rods, I might give the fine ones away, but I'd fight for the UF's. They are awesome. If I had known the kind of edge I've been missing, I would have bought one of the UF benchstones 2 years ago.

As my guinea pig, I got out my daily carry Benchmade Osborne 940, which is 154CM steel. I've never taken the time to re-profile it, and it needed it desperately. So, the new diamond rods were first. After getting a good back bevel with the diamond rods, I switched to the fine rods, stll on the back bevel. About 10 strokes a side to get rid of the rough scratches from the diamonds. Then I went to the primary bevel, giving each side about 10 strokes on the fine rods. I then switched to the ultra fines and alternated sides, about 30 strokes total. As I used the ultra fines, I continuously lightened the pressure until only the weight of the blade was pressing down on the rods.

I've had a "scary sharp" test that I've never been able to pass. Cut a hanging Kleenex in the same manner we usually think of using newspaper to test with. It tore on the first try. So I gave the knife a few more very light strokes. This time, IT CUT CLEANLY! I'm still in shock. The only knife that ever came close to cutting on this test, rather than tearing, is my BF Blue Native. Even it wouldn't cut it cleanly, though. This may have been a fluke...I may never get another edge this sharp again. But doing it one time is enough to sell me on these new rods. God help me if Spyderco doesn't do regular production runs and I break or loose mine. I'll go nuts!

If I had to give up one set of rods - the diamond, the medium, the fine, or the ultrafine - it would be the fine rods without a doubt. It might take longer to get a decent edge with the UF's as compared to the fines, but the ultra's can take an edge WAY past anything the fine ones can even dream of. The fine rods are now a time saving convenience - the ultras are a necessity.

I now have a use for my 203's canvas case. It's gonna ride shotgun with my 204, carried the diamond and the ultrafine rods.

Thanks, Sal, for another great Spyderco tool!

BTW - both of mine had red ends. If it ever begins to wear off, I'll just grab a red Sanford marker and touch 'em up. I'm not sure that I can reliably tell the difference just on the feel of the fine vs ultrafine. Rest assured, though, the edge from the ultrafine rods will make it apparent which is which, if the red ever does completely wear off.

..user posts reply...then...

Okay, it's now official. These things really work. While I was waiting for my message to post, I grab another Kleenex to marvel at my knife's newfound abilities. Yep, I bumped the pad of my hand and I am now bleeding like a stuck pig. Doesn't hurt though - nice and clean. It does look like a couple of stitches may be in order...gotta go...

The ultra fine stones should be moved from experimental to the realm of everybody must have some. Made my Lil'Temperence and Salsa edges better than factory. They (the uf stones) should be more important to a Spyderco nut than the diamond stones. The uf stones do not reprofile more importantly the stones give Spyderco knives the edge they deserve (scary sharp).
