If I had to pick between my fine and my ultrafine rods, I might give the fine ones away, but I'd fight for the UF's. They are awesome. If I had known the kind of edge I've been missing, I would have bought one of the UF benchstones 2 years ago.
As my guinea pig, I got out my daily carry Benchmade Osborne 940, which is 154CM steel. I've never taken the time to re-profile it, and it needed it desperately. So, the new diamond rods were first. After getting a good back bevel with the diamond rods, I switched to the fine rods, stll on the back bevel. About 10 strokes a side to get rid of the rough scratches from the diamonds. Then I went to the primary bevel, giving each side about 10 strokes on the fine rods. I then switched to the ultra fines and alternated sides, about 30 strokes total. As I used the ultra fines, I continuously lightened the pressure until only the weight of the blade was pressing down on the rods.
I've had a "scary sharp" test that I've never been able to pass. Cut a hanging Kleenex in the same manner we usually think of using newspaper to test with. It tore on the first try. So I gave the knife a few more very light strokes. This time, IT CUT CLEANLY! I'm still in shock. The only knife that ever came close to cutting on this test, rather than tearing, is my BF Blue Native. Even it wouldn't cut it cleanly, though. This may have been a fluke...I may never get another edge this sharp again. But doing it one time is enough to sell me on these new rods. God help me if Spyderco doesn't do regular production runs and I break or loose mine. I'll go nuts!
If I had to give up one set of rods - the diamond, the medium, the fine, or the ultrafine - it would be the fine rods without a doubt. It might take longer to get a decent edge with the UF's as compared to the fines, but the ultra's can take an edge WAY past anything the fine ones can even dream of. The fine rods are now a time saving convenience - the ultras are a necessity.
I now have a use for my 203's canvas case. It's gonna ride shotgun with my 204, carried the diamond and the ultrafine rods.
Thanks, Sal, for another great Spyderco tool!
BTW - both of mine had red ends. If it ever begins to wear off, I'll just grab a red Sanford marker and touch 'em up. I'm not sure that I can reliably tell the difference just on the feel of the fine vs ultrafine. Rest assured, though, the edge from the ultrafine rods will make it apparent which is which, if the red ever does completely wear off.
..user posts reply...then...
Okay, it's now official. These things really work. While I was waiting for my message to post, I grab another Kleenex to marvel at my knife's newfound abilities. Yep, I bumped the pad of my hand and I am now bleeding like a stuck pig. Doesn't hurt though - nice and clean. It does look like a couple of stitches may be in order...gotta go...
