Ultra Fine Ceramic Triangles: Feedback Please.

Got mine yesterday. No red ends on the stones, but red (which quickly came off) on the caps of the tubes they were shippped in.

Tried them out on a few knives. Unlike wire edge, I didn't get any noticeable improvement with S90V (that could just be me and my Apogee -- no matter what, that thing won't shave worth a dang). On the other hand, they turned my Starmate into a lean, mean, slicin' machine.! :D

Hey dsvirsky,

That's exactly what I sharpened. A rainbow anodized, and a carbon fiber Apogee.

You really didn't notice a difference? Mine did show a slight improvement in shaving hair, but the vast improvement was noticed on other media. Cardboard, paper, meat (not my finger), etc. I think S90V takes a different edge, a lot like Talonite or Stellite 6K, but it was definitely sharper, IMHO. Darrel actually suggests only using the grey medium stones, but I guess I like a shiny edge.

I do not have U-Fine rods for Sharpmaker. I do have Sharpmaker standard set and U-Fine BenchStone, so I have some experience with SPYDERCO ceramics and some thoughts to share.

In my humble opinion Sharpmaker standard set definitely lacks coarse rods for edge reprofiling. But it is more than enough for edge maintenance. The user can keep the knife as sharp as he or she will manage to sharpen it, and the sharpness possible to obtain is more than enough for normal knife use. In fact edge honing to higher polish would add nothing or almost nothing to cutting performance.

Well, but what to do if higher than obtainable with standard set edge polishing is required for these or another reasons? My solution would be Sharpmaker and U-Fine BenchStone. At this edge petting level what U-Fine ceramics provides no one device can replace good free hand sharpening!

Probably it is impossible to make U-Fine rods in another color. Once Sal said it is basically the same ceramics as Fine one, but later honed with super-fine diamond abrasive surface to extra smoothness...

FYI: Another forum member posted the Ultra Fine rods were sold out on the Spyderco Factory Outlet web site. Now, the Ultra Fine Sharpmaker rods are available again on the Spyderco Factory Outlet website.

Hey Serg. I'll bring a pair of the UF's to IWA for you. They are interesting. I'll try to snag a pair of diamonds for you as well.

Many thanks Sal!

I have no doubts it very useful item but I simply have better control on free hand finishing touch, it's just me.

I have pretty dumb idea: what would you say about U-Fine ProFile? It could be (perhaps?) less expensive than both U-Fine B-Stone and the pair of U-Fine Triangles. And still more than enough for decent finishing touch if such hi-polishing is required...

As you can see I'm about free hand finishing again ;)
