Ultra-mini BOB; couple questions...

I want to throw together a really compact grab-bag. Something along the lines of a mini BOB, but think even more basic. Just a few things to make life a little more enjoyable if I had to evac or what ever for a short while.

Now I'm trying to keep space and weight to an absolute minimum and usefulness to a maximum. So a couple items I consider valuable are going to be:
- TP
- Duct tape
- many other things I have yet to filter down

But my questions pertain to the DT and the TP. How do you guys carry these things? For the tape, I've seen many different variations of the same thing; wrapping a select amount around an item. How does this affect the adhesion of the DT after un-wrapping? Does it make it easier/harder to utilize? What are the pro's and con's?

Q2: How about TP? Obviously a roll of TP is going to be rather bulky, so what would a useful amount be? Its pretty obvious that if I need my own TP, others will as well and there is a good chance they will be family/friends. Also waterproofing, I suppose a plastic zip-lock is about as good as its going to get here... without spending rediculous amounts of money on a TP kit :p

I'm still working on finding the right (priced) satchel/bag and trading for another Victorinox Spirit to put in there, but those should be about the only things that I don't have on-hand...

I buy the TP from the Target dollar section, then ditch the plastic container and wrap it in some platic wrap--so far it has worked for me. I wrap duct tape around a stubby pencil or just get a Ritter kit and use the little roll of tape it has in it.

Get a ten dollar bag fanny pack from Wally world.

Both items can simply be 'squashed' to save space. I do wrap bright duct tape around items of gear, though this is largely for Cody Lundin-inspired "make everything bright and visible" reasons. However, I also carry a medium-sized roll of duct tape that has been flattened and secured with elastics. Same goes for TP. For camping purposes, I buy the econo-brand one-ply, and it can be packed down and placed in a Ziploc. Might as well bring the whole roll. If you're in a bug-out situation, it will come in handy.

All the best,

- Mike

Another option is the TP packs out of MRE's, might be a little rough, but beats leaves, lol

A little tip related to the TP that someone once gave me is carry a small amount of PJ or I guess a lip salve would work and before you head into the bush to do the biz, rub some of the PJ on your asshole , you will then find that there is a lot less mess to wipe off and will require only a minimum amount of TP !!! Nice subject eh !!!!

One thing I really like about civilization is TP, but in TEOTWAWKI scenario, I'd probably switch over to an old sponge or wash cloth in a ziplock bag. In a previous thread on this topic, corncobs and pinecones (polarity sensitive of course) came well recommended, but I'm not quite there yet.:)

Just be sure to remember where that lip salve was last before you use it on your lips!

I carry DT in all my kits and make a "flat roll" out of it. You can carry quite a bit of it flat and it takes up very little space. I prefer this method instead of wrapping it around something.

I also do the same for TP and put it in a zip lock bag.

Walmart and Cabelas as well as Campmor carry the small rolls of TP aprox1 1/2 " that store well in small kits. It would not be difficult to make small rolls and vacuum pack them maybe us folded and rolled paper towels.

I always carry a 1/4 roll of tp. Just catch one that's partially used up in the bathroom at home, take out the cardboard tube and flatten it. I put it in a Ziploc freezer bag along with 2-3 sandwich bags in case I have to pack out the used tp. I WILL NOT PACK OUT THE POO!

A for duct tape, I wrap some around a cut off pencil in most of my kits. I might affect the stickiness but only slightly by rewrapping it.

e-mail me and I'll give you a link for a great price on small rolls that would be perfect for packing.

I call it 100mph tape, but it's the same as quality duct tape. Best method I've found to carry it is using an old credit card...it's the perfect size/width and gives good structure to the flat role. I can get 12-15 feet in a very flat package and always carry one in my back pocket along with any of my kit bags.

That's so funny you mention that cos I have mentioned on here before about a buddy of mine where that came up.

This buddy of mine, Dave , used to rub his lip salve between his ass cheeks when he was doing multi-day hikes in Scotland to stop any rubbing.Anyway a guy he was hiking with one time saw him putting the lip salve back in his pocket and said " Dave can I borrow your lip stuff cos my lips are really chapped with this wind ", Dave being the generous guy he is just passed it over with a smile on his face !!!!:D:thumbup:

So, basically, you want what I carry with me all the time.

For TP, I carry several packets of Cottonelle flushable wipes. They come one wipe to a packet and are great. Made by Kleenex. Handy to have in the city, if you really have to go and you don't find out until it's too late that the stall you picked doesn't have toilet paper.

Carrying a small can of Bag Balm will take care of the chapped lips, irritated skin, lubing of the bung hole, dressing small wounds and insect bites, etc. You can see a picture of the small can here: http://www.bagbalm.com/better.htm. It's made for animals but it's good for you, too. You can also use it to condition leather, etc.

I haven't tried it but I bet it will help with fire starting as well.

I like the Maxpedition bags because they are one of the best. I carry a Versapack Fatboy with me everywhere I go, and I do mean everywhere. I'm hoping to upgrade to their Colossus (Christmas?) since I find the Fatboy to be just a tad bit small for everything I like to carry. I also got one of their 4" sheaths to attach to the Fatboy for my Victorinox Spirit.

I was thinking about doing a separate post about my Urban Survival kit. I wonder if that would be on topic for Wilderness & Survival forum.

Take the inner cardboard roll from the TP, smash it flat, and put it in a ziplock bag. Pull from the INSIDE of the roll and it will all stay together. Waterproof, packs small, no hassle.
