Hi,

I have visited the Busse site and am quite impressed with the abilities of this knife.

I've handled a CS Trailmaster and found it to feel awkward, with the center of balance way forward and grip too narrow.

Well now I am looking for a shorter knife that is high quality.

Any opinions on balance and handling from those who have held, cut, and carried the Basic 7 and 5 models?

Thanks much.

My personal favorite of the Basic line is the Basic 5. It just seems to have the perfect balance and feel to me, but I'm sure others will have other favorites.

The largest impact is what you need the knife to do. Although I love the 5, it doesn't make a good chopper. For a good combination of a camp knife and a chopper, I'll grab the 7. It's still comfortable and can do both jobs well.

Just like so many other things, everything with a knife's design is a compromise.
A knife with weight forward balance is better for chopping but is more tiring to use for dextrious tasks such as gutting, skinning, butchering, etc. In food prep, you generally have a cutting board which supports the weight of the blade a good portion of the time. Also, the media you are cutting, meat, potatoes, vegetables and the like also support the weight of the blade during your task. In tasks where the blade is relatively unsupported, the weight forward has more leverage advantage over your hand. With more weight in the hand and less "out there" the knife will be easier to control, seemingly lighter and less tiring, but it will not chop as well.

In other words, evaluate the most likely uses for the KIQ (knife in question) and then decide.

The Basic #5 & 7 are both well balanced knives. You'll find that the #7 has a bigger handle than the #5. The #5 is a handier carry knife, but the #7 is better suited to chopping and clearing applications. Hope this helps.
