Offering for sale: Ultra Rare: Sole Authorship AL Pendray Wootz Steel Stag Handle Bowie Knife with Presentation Sheath. Mastersmith Al Pendray is well known for re-discovering the lost art of creating Wootz. Wootz, with its intricate crystalline grain pattern, is the original Damascus -- what pattern welded Damascus developed from. The technique for making wootz was originally discovered around 300 AD. By combining wrought iron and charcoal in a crucible, a steel was created that out-performed all other metals at that time. Unfortunately, the technique for making wootz was lost in the mid 1750s. It was not until the early 1990s that Al Pendray re-discovered this lost skill. The blade is formed from Al's wootz and have an intricate crystalline pattern inherent to the steel. There are near impossible to find. Blade is in pristine condition for a 25 year plus blade. Wootz Steel Blade with Mokume Hilt and Butt. Never used or carried. Always properly stored.
