I have been debating with myself on whether or not to get the ultrafine stones for my Sharpmaker. I need a good reason to use the money to buy them. How sharp would you say they would get the edge on my paramilitary after stropping on a leather belt without compound? Will it treetop arm hair or will i need to use stropping compound? Thanks for considering my Questions?

If you got back 3 pages, there is another thread on the same subject. Yes they are worth the price.

Here is what I posted in that thread.

There was a thread recently on the Spyderco forum about this topic. http://www.spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34139&highlight=UF+rods

Here is what I posted there:

I think they are well worth the price. I can get my knives to whittle hair on the UF. I can't get them to do that on the Fine.

I posted this before but it never hurts to have visuals. =P

BTW the steels are VG-10 on spydies and CPM S30V on the BM 558 and 154CM on the BM 14210

I really like my UF bench stone. It puts a great polish on an edge (or any metal, for that matter,)

I wonder if the OP could approximate the effect of an ultra fine stone with a sheet or two of 2000 grit sand paper and some plate glass? Seems like it would be worth a shot as a "try before you buy" measure.

If you like the edge you get from that, just think; the UF stone is washable/reusable. It will never wear out, and short of someone bashing it to dust with a hammer, it'll probably be around until the constituent elements break down via proton decay. By that time, the entire universe will be eternally cold, dark, lifeless and dismal, so no one with be around to care:)

The SharpMaker is a great bit of kit. The UF rods are icing on the cake.

Thanks for the great pics... they are worth a thousand words.....
