Umnum flipper interest?

Whats that old saying...."if it aint broke dont fix it"

I know CRK spend countless hours in the design, research, development,,etc.

of the umnun.Chris has the umnun down to imo the best knife it can be.

I emailed CRK about precisely this, right after I got my first Sebenza. The response was that such devices as flippers, waves, assist mechanisms, etc., are just not a direction that Chris is interested in going in. Simple as that.

There's always aftermarket mods, though, if you're really driven. A waved Umnumzaan might be kind of cool...

Even though its a cool idea ( I would probably get one just because its a CRK ), there are enough companies out there that have flippers. I dont have one, but Hindrer looks to make the best. I would have one if they had them for the $395. I will never pay the inflated prices.........As for CRK, what makes them unique is that they do their own thing and are great at it.

Personally, I am not a fan of flippers, waves, etc. and I am pleased to hear that CRK is not interested in going that direction. I think CRK will always stand for simple, rugged, precise, solidly-built folding knives that are free of extraneous complications.

[thread resurrection]:D

I for one would LOVE any(Seb/Zaan/Mnandi) CRK flipper with NO thumbstuds.I think a tastefully done flipper(think Begg & Ralph)would be a great addition to the CRK lineup.

opinions?

I was thinking of starting a CRK flipper thread, but a search turned up this one,so I figured I'd reply to it.Instead of starting a new one.

It'd be hard to make an Umnumzaan without thumbstuds, since they double as blade stops.

IMO , a flipper requires that after the knife is flipped that it must be re-positioned in the hand for the proper grip as opposed to a thumb stud opener that doesn't require as much manipulation.

I would like to hear the thoughts of others. :)

I wouldn't hold my breath on CRK making one
.

I agree with you bigmark408....

I have known Chris for 10 years- I speak to him on the phone quite regularly.

I can tell you that as CRK makes their folding knives mainly as Utility Tools and that based on Chris's unwavering philosophy on bladed implements / knives that cut, we might never see a flipper from their shop.

Just my opinion.

Take care, Neil

Just doesn't seem quite right to myself but then I haven't ever been much of a flipper fan. Seems to clash with the clean and simple style of the blade.

I have never really been into flippers at all, but ever since I saw this thread I can't get the idea of an umnum flipper out of my head. Sucks, because I don't think we will ever see it happen.

I would be in for a flipper for sure! Even just a small discreet hump on the back would really help to get the blade started.

Look at that rounded area on the tang, the part where a flipper might go. On the Sebenza, that rounded area is almost touching the stop pin as the blade moves, so there isn't much you can do there. On the Umnum, however, the stop pin has been moved to the studs, so that same rounded area has basically unlimited clearance.
Therefore, theoretically, it would not be terribly difficult to drill and tap the 'Zaan's tang to insert an improvised flipper. If you're any good at carving metal - I am not - it could even turn out quite pretty.

I like flippers..... but only on smaller designs where my big paws are cramped whe I use the thumbstuds........ I wouldn't expect a flipper out of Chris' shop for a long while, if ever....... besides, doesn't flipping a Sebbie or an Umnumzaan void the warrenty?

Been there done that. They're fun but after that wears off I've sold all the ones I've owned and look down and sure enough, my trusty ole Sebbie is still in my front pocket.
