Umnumzaan Detent Ball

I'm glad that some of you found the pictures of the detent ball useful, particularly does who are considering purchasing an Umnumzaan. It's all about sharing knowledge and opinions here.

For those who have yet to experience it, let me tell you that the Umnumzaan is designed to slice. It slices so smoothly and so easily. Effortless.

Great pictures and congrats! welcome to the club of umnumzaan fans!

Hi there, looks like an awesome knife. Thanks for the pics! Quick question on the Umn... is it true that it does not have a 'pivot bushing' and can be over tightened, etc? I have no doubt that there is no blade play, but isn't the feature of the bushing the main appeal of the Sebenza line?

That is true (no bushing, can be over-tightened), but many fine folders are the same. Yes, I think the bushing is a signature element of the Sebenza, but it's not the only way to design and manufacture a top-quality folder.

The pivot on the Umnumzaan is a really massive piece of hardware. It's different than the Sebenza, but at least as good and durable.

Thanks for sharing your photos!

I recently picked up the Umnum (new pivot) and my blade shares the near exact same off-centeredness as yours.
Was curious if there were other owners of the Umnum that had the same issue.

I saw on a video that the reason this happens is because the washer on the opposite side is not oversized like in the Sebenza, where it actually covers an area that is directly opposite from the pressure directed from the ceramic ball, which is what causes the blade to be pushed to the left.

I wonder if there is any accuracy in that theory. Does sound logical though...

You might be able to tune it out. Try loosening up the pivot screws and then hold one side still while tightening the other, then try the other side, etc., until you get it just right.

I got a new pivot Zaan yesterday and it was perfectly centered. Took it apart and lubed it, and it was off a hair. Knew it could be centered because it came that way.

After trying the above process over and over in about 20 minutes I finally had it perfectly centered again but it was not too tight to open the blade up.
