Umnumzaan: Is this normal?

Okay, so maybe I broke it or I'm just looking for perfection.:D

Try this:

Open knife. Push/pull blade to and from the lock, as if you want to close/open with the lockbar in the way. Check for space as you put pressure on the blade towards the lock between thumblugs and frame. Plus, while push/pulling feel the movement of the lockbar against your palm.

My guess is there maybe some play where the ceramic ball and socket meet. Make sense?

I tried what you described with my Umnum. No space between the thumblugs and blade seems to lock solid as a rock. No movement, solid as can be. Did you take yours apart?

I have not taken mine apart. I figured I'll wait until CRK makes a proper tool so I don't mess up the pivot. With that said I won't be carrying the Umnumzaan until that time.

I inspect all the knives that I purchase. If I find something that doesn't feel right I ask the forum or the maker. Sometimes I feel that I maybe a little to hard of a Judge but if I don't find out it would drive me crazy owning something that doesn't pass the inspection.

Purposed question: As being knife users/collectors, not limited this to CRK, is it too much to ask that the product pass your personal inspection no matter how stringent?

I tend to seek perfection. Only in things that I know can have it.

IMO it's not too much to ask at all. If you were talking about a $30 folder I would say you were expecting too much. I tried and tried with my umnum but I can't detect any blade play or lockbar movement. I'd say contact CRK and send it in. I highly doubt that Chris would tolerate having a customer that wasn't completely satisfied with one of his knives.;):)

My Unumzaan does NOT do that either. I would agree about calling CRK & then sending it in.

I know this is subjective but how much pressure do you think you are applying?

I grab the handle with one hand and then face the knife edge away from my palm of the other hand and push/pull the tip by the swedge. The pressure I use is,...hmmm firm. I wouldn't say significant amount of pressure but I'm not babying it. Enough to make the thumblug move.

I'm not sure if I understand right! What is moving: the lockbar as the push the blade up and down, or the thumbstubs on the blade? Sorry for the confusion!

The thumblug is solid, it doesn't move around on the blade. The lockbar seems to be solid as well. I don't know if it is the ball or tang. The tolerance must be off some place. If either the tang to ball or handle to thumblug spacing is off by just a hair (.003") you will have movement someplace in the lockup.

I did this on my small Micarta three or so years ago because as I conducted the inspection I could feel and hear the blade tap against the stop pin. I sent it in. CRK looked at it and said they couldn't hear or feel anything but I still wasn't happy:o because I know it was there. CRK probably thought I was crazy but I swear I'm not;) and there was a problem. They made me another one. The current one is perfect.

I received the Umnumzaan from CRK, they state everything is okay, nothing about the O-rings.

I looked it over again with a microscope and I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason there is a small amount of movement with the lockbar is because of the O-rings stopping the full operation of locking open the blade. If you open the knife gently the lockbar doesn’t fully jamb against the tang. Move the blade with more force (faster) or push on the thumblug and the lockbar jambs against the tang.
