I also tried assembling without loc-tite. Seemed ok at first, but it did eventually loosen up on me and I am not keen on having the pivot on my Umnumzaan loose as it has come open in my pocket on two occasions.

I highly recommend that you use loc-tite as instructed by the manufacturer. I have NEVER had one of my Sebenzas come open unintentionally.

How were you carrying your knife when that happened ? Also the pivot tension should do little to change the detent strength, which is what holds the blade closed.

I just got my Umnumzaan over a week ago, and it's now my favorite knife. I don't own an Insingo (yet), but I do own a large regular Sebenza. I love both knives, but favor the Zaan. And although the blade stock may be a bit thicker on the Zaan, the hollow grind on it is thinner than on my Seb, making it a better cutter/slicer.

I was actually trying to make the same decision as you are, but ultimately I went with the Zaan. I may also buy an Insingo one day, probably a small one, but for me, the Zaan is 'The Boss.' There is a slightly different technique of opening/unlocking the Zaan, and it took me a couple days to get used to unlocking it; but it's very natural for me now.

Good question. I used to carry clipped to my front right pocket. One day I lost my Micarta Inlay Sebenza 21 when apparently it slipped off my pocket and I did not realize it. I replaced that one with another Micarta version but with an Insingo blade. That also has slipped from my pocket but luckily I heard it hit the tile floor. Suffice it to say that, regardless of how many people rave about them, I do not trust these clips at all. I now deep pocket carry ALL of my Chris Reeve knives and no, there is absolutely nothing physically wrong with any of my clips. Buyer beware as far as I am concerned.

So...while deep pocket carrying my Umnumzaan I reached down one day and got a nice slice in my hand because it had come open in my pocket a cut right through an otherwise fine pair of jeans. Sharp Knife! This never happens with my Sebenzas. I figured it must have been due to the glass breaker hitting the bottom of the pocket (or something in the pocket) and causing the blade to pop open a bit. So, I switched to a tip down carry. A couple of weeks later I sat on my couch and heard a very odd scratching noise. Looking down I was shocked to see the blade had opened again and this time cut through my jeans (goodbye to another pair) AND put a hole in my couch cushion. This is getting ridiculous now. I stopped carrying the knife. After a while I decided to try one more thing. I tightened the pivot beyond the torque that was set at the factory. The blade is a bit more difficult to open but....so far it has stayed shut. I am carrying it as I type this. There does not appear to be anything wrong with either the detent ot the lock bar strength but you are correct. I should probably just send it back to the factory for a closer look by the experts. Maybe there is an issue with this one.

What kind of pants were you wearing when those happened? I've noticed with thinner material mine can slip out easily, but thicker material--standard jeans, cargos, etc.--it holds better than any other clip I have because the seam of the pocket gets trapped between the where it screws in and the middle bump. The Mnandi is opposite; it grips thinner material well because the gap between its body and the clip is thin, but it is horrible with thicker material because as the material is wedged into the clip, the end, which has ridges to hold the material to keep the knife in place, flairs out so cannot grip the pants. So, I clip my Sebs and Zaan in jeans and pocket it in sport shorts and dress pants and do the opposite with the Mnandi. I have not lost any--I haven't even seen them shift slightly--but I still worry sometimes about losing one, so I ask to see if your experience contradicts what I do.

That's crazy if it's opening in your pocket :o None of my CRK's have ever done that, and none of the knives i've ever owned have done that either. i'm voting you have goblins in your pocket

on topic. i got the umnumzaan first, and am looking forward to an insingo later on. can't go wrong with the boss

One slipped out while wearing Carhartt jeans. That is the one I lost. I figured that the motion of getting in and out of my truck is what worked the clip off of my pocket. But..the second time I was wearing Diamond Gusset Defenders and had the knife clipped into the small pocket on the right thigh on the jeans. I figured that it would be safe there since there is no type of movement (at least none that I can do at my age :) ) that would tend to push it off the clip. Wrong! If also fell out but luckily I heard it hit the floor. Nothing wrong with the clip (except it does not do a good job of keeping the knife in place). On both occasions where my Umnumzaan opened in my pocket (while deep pocket carrying) I was wearing Carhartt jeans.

These days I tend to carry my Large Micarta Sebenza with Insingo blade exclusively in a deep pocket fashion. No complaints.

By the way, unless anyone gets the wrong idea, I think CRK makes the best darn knives on the market for my purposes and I own several:

Large Sebenza 21 with Mammoth Ivory inlays
Large plain Sebenza 21
Large Sebenza 21 with Micarta inlays and standard CRK blade (lost)
Large Sebenza 21 with Micarta inlays and Insingo blade
Small Sebenza classic with Ironwood inlays
Umnumzaan
Nyala - my current hunting knife. Great fixed blade!
