So, ive owned an umnumzaan before, but sold it and bought this used one to replace (left handed!) My question is.. none of my other crks have the lockbar this far over. Is this too far, or ok? Btw- yes ive reached out to them! So, what say you guys.. go or no go?

That looks like about 85/90% lock up. It’s tough to guess whether it’s settled there and won’t move anymore or if it will move closer to touching the other slab. None of the four that I have is that far over.
That’s a you call if you feel it’s too late of a lock up, I’d say as long as it doesn’t have lock stick, it should be fine. I’ve read that early lock up on the Umnumzaan will cause the lock to fail.

If there is no stick, you can use it for years like that. And when it's done, send it in for a bath. Assuming the blade is the original.

Look at the bright side: it's as safe as can be.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with buying a second one for Sundays, and you can use this one during the week :)

(I'm a Zaan fan, if you can't tell)

How are the orings? The only time I had issues with lockup on a zaan was when I had orings that were too new or too thick. The lock would actually fail in that case because it ended up being too early. I'm wondering if the orings are so worn that it's traveling a little further than you expect.

Ya they are original i think. Look pretty worn

I just got a new one, off the exchange, and it has a very late lock up (85-90%), given its just been opened/closed a few times with a DOB of December 16, 2024, it seems odd. If I hold the knife like I'm actually going to use it, the detente ball does contact the other scale, leaving a bit of the factory grease on there. Should I be concerned with such a new knife? I also have a Sebenza 31 from late 2024, and it does NOT do this. Photo of normal lock up next to the Sebenza.

I got my first 'Zaan (second CR) new, two days ago from an online retailer and the DOB is 12/17/24. It doesn't lock up late like your's and it looks more like your Sebenza. The detent ball doesn't contact the scale. The lock up is actually a little later on my six month old Inkosi, but not as late as your Umnumzaan. Not much help, but good luck.

Thanks for providing some additional context. I'm not sure if I should post a whole new thread to get some insights from folks here? I'm new-ish to this forum, but in other forums I'm part of, it's frowned upon for starting a new thread for existing content - a genuine curiosity for BF?

Thanks

Continuing in this thread makes the most sense. If it had been a long dormant thread, then Necro would be inappropriate.

Have you disassembled it? It looks like there is more of a gap on the scale side of the pivot too, but maybe that's just the lighting or angle of the pic causing an illusion. I think I would probably send it in though with that much lockup on a knife that new. The lockup on my zaan is more than any of my other knives at around 70%, but it was well broken in when I bought it and hasn't really moved since.

I have not done anything with it other than open/close it ~5-7 times. I wasn't planning to even carry it until my Lynch clip shows up, in hopes it won't have a wear scar on the lockbar, like my Sebenza got after removing the stock clip from it. I have sent a request in to Chris Reeve, hopefully they honor their warranty for a second owner, since I purchased it from the exchange?

Yeah as long as it hasn't been modified or abused, neither of which seem to be issues with your knife.

I have a 21 from 2012, the lockup is more or less (less, to be fair 🤣) as OPs Zaan. It's not a practical problem but rather a somewhat cosmetic annoyance tbh.
Use that knife and send it in if it gets worse.

I think mine may be worse than the OP's Zaan, given the ceramic ball does touch the opposite scale, I'll hold on using the knife until I hear back from Chris Reeve, since this does seem to be an actual performance issue:
