Umnumzaan Question

I sure do! :)

Can I have a spare too? :D

Maryland is very strict about CCW permits and because of it, crime is very high. In the physical movement sense, I am crippled as can be and most people's grandmothers can outrun me. I've used a knife once before on another human being and while it was a psychologically damning experience, it is also probably why I am not dead today. Striders have never done it for me for a few reasons, mainly because I don't like flat grinds for SD weapons as they don't slice like a hollow grind and additionally (and mostly) that I can't open Striders worth a damn no matter how hard I try

I am into the knives which can have multi uses although tactical and weapon are words I try to avoid using which is difficult as it implies intent. 99.9% of the time a knife I carry is a tool used for utility and eating. Once you use the knife in a manner where to intentionally intimidate or stop an assailant, that is when the knife becomes a tactical folder\weapon. When traveling to certain areas, I carry a waved Civilian which is the exception as the Civilian is designed to be used as a defensive weapon and I carry it for the sole reason of self defense.

Sounds like you are really into ‘Tactical” knives since self defense is your primary design criteria.

You really should get a Strider Sng. It is a superior knife to the ‘Zann in that respect.:D

Nick,
Couldn’t help but notice that you edited your original thread….

Wow, you say you can open a zann easily but can’t open a Strider? That is incredible.
The zann is easily the slowest opening folder I have, and the hardest to open. No surprise, CRK’s aren’t known for their ‘flickability’.

We must be talking about two different knives.

As far as self defense goes, I have never had to defend myself with a knife against a human, either by direct use or intimidation. (Although I would never use any weapon for intimidation) .However, I have had to defend myself against wild animals. Both bear and moose have confronted me on several occasions. A knife, no matter how big, would have been as good as useless against these giants.

Pepper spray worked beautifully however. They didn’t get within 10 feet of me before turning away.

I hear Tasers work well against people also. Never tried them on critters though.

I wish you the best of luck, it sounds like a very hostile environment you live in.

Not to get in the ring here, but don't forget the ALMIGHTY buck 110 is known for taking down Grizzly's :D

.....so I'm sure an Umnumzaan or strider could do it......not that I would EVER want to be that close to anything except my fiance........just saying :p

Oh, don’t get me started on the ‘my knife can take down any beast’ line.

I’ve seen ‘tough guys’ scream like little girls when a mama moose charged them.
The big bulls are just insane. I wouldn’t take them on with a Samurai sword.

Bears are just a whole other matter altogether, very intimidating. They carry knives on them also, ten in front and ten in back. They have their own particular style of knife fighting which is very effective. Oh yeah, they fight dirty, they bite.

They can be passive though. I ran into a blackie last summer at a park in town. I didn’t even know what it was that was making the noise until he stuck his nose out of the brush!

He wasn’t looking for trouble, and neither was I, so we just kind of stared at each other until he decided to go on his way. He probably weighed around 350lbs. I was totally unarmed but resisted the urge to run. He was completely unaggressive, so I calmed down enough to take his picture as he wandered off down the trail.

I saw the same bear a week later, he was with his girlfriend this time. They both waited patiently for me to ride past them on my Mt. bike. He is a good bear. The F&G guy said he won’t trap him as long as he cooperates with the public, which he has done for several years now.

I wouldn't want to meet one of your big Texas wild hogs in a dark alley. Glad we don't have to worry about those.

LOL, now bear in mind the people taking down these grizzly's didn't do it by choice either, caught off guard and had no other choice :p

I do like that bear story, the only real "wildlife" down here are the millions of feral hogs running on the loose. It makes for great hunting year round, and some places will let you hunt for free (or even pay) to have you take care of their pesky hogs

Moose is a whole other story. I'd might as well hand my umnumzaan over to the moose in the middle of finding a big enough tree to hide behind :D

When I first moved up here, years ago, I wore ‘bear bells’ when I hiked. I quit that habit in short order, they sure were annoying. When I see tourists wearing them now, I reminded them that the bears think of them as ‘dinner bells’. You should see the looks on their faces. :D

I do carry a lightweight .44 magnum with bear loads when I backpack. I carry Quickclot also, so, there you go!

I suppose one could live in Africa for a while and lose the unhealthy fear of a lion behind every tree and a cobra under every rock. After a while you kind of lose the paranoid fears and just learn to be cautious, no matter where you live.

I fear potentially aggressive unleashed dogs more than bears anyway. Pepper spray works well on them too. Better than a knife, that’s for sure. Well, OK., maybe not a mighty Buck 110.

I've had my Umnumzaan for about 2 months and love it. The quality is first rate and it looks perfect from every angle.

I don't have any issues opening the knife, but I have small fingers and that might help. IMO it looks every bit as strong as my SnG. But then again I can't imagine doing anything that would break either one. :)

I like how the Umnumzaan (and sebenza) have a very slim profile and don't take up any pocket space.

I had owned both an SnG and SMF, and they took up almost an entire pocket making it damn near impossible to dig for change :D

Anybody know how to tie that lanyard back on?.......I took mine off and completely forgot how to tie that knot :o

I changed the original post to convey that I was inquiring about the knife and I was happy upon reviewing it.

As far as opening difficulty, I am apparently an excellent illustration as to how different knives fit different people better. I cannot operate a Strider easily by any means and for me the Umnumzaan is as fast as any other manual, assisted or automatic folder as is a well lubed and used Sebenza.

Hopefully you won't ever have to defend against another human. It's messy, terrifying, and psychologically damaging. If I was in a position to use pepper spray, I would have in a heart beat. If I wasn't disabled maybe I could have ran away. Baltimore is one of the most violent cities in the nation; it may actually be the most violent.

For lions and tigers and bears I prefer my Tactical Samuri Sword in Carbon V...never used a taser or had one used on me.
