Umnumzaan Update? Hinderer

I'm good with rolling improvements, especially on knives aimed at harder use. If this addition reduces the number of warranty issues and makes the knife safer, even if only for a very rare circumstance, it's a win-win, IMO.

Now, if they would just make the tip more stout:cool:

The way I look at it is if you're going to add something to an already perfect knife then make it truly functional as a LBS and not just an idiot proof anti tampering device. In addition aesthetically it should be made of titanium to fluidly follow the current design. Just don't warranty tampered locks is another way of dealing with the problem as well but I know how controversial that could be too. All I know is I love my umnumzaan just the way it is!

I agree that it could have been done more aesthetically pleasing (by placing the disc on the inside).

Having said that I understand why it is needed though! I've had 2 Umnumzaans: the first was fine from day one, but the other took a few weeks before it opened smoothly. I actually had quite a callus on my thumb before it opened without undue effort! I can believe that some people become inpatient and start fiddling with the lock, thereby messing things up.

My Sebenzas where all fine from day 1, but now my Umnumzaan is smoother than my Sebenzas........

Well, in that case it would have been a much smarter solution to include a note or a dedicated "user's manual" with every knife instead of tinkering with a perfect design.

Sorry, but I'm not a fan: The moron disc takes away from the simplicity CR knives are renowned for. Furthermore, it associates the knife and the brand with certain "tacticool" knives that CRK otherwise is (thankfully) not connected with.

I am also wondering if this disc doesn't interfere with drawing the knife or at least increases wear on the pocket, as it seems to represent a thin hinge on which a pocket edge might catch.

There must be a better way. I'm sure they'll find it.

Completely agree. As far as the wear I wonder if the coating on the disc will scratch off over time as well,

The disk isn't coated, it has a blasted finish the same as the handle slabs. The disk is made of steel so it's a different colour but it will wear the same as any blasted surface will.

Back to my question, though...are the regular Umnuzaans shipping this way now, or just the Wilson Star-Tac versions?

Man, thanks. First thing Tuesday I'll see about getting a cane and a dog. :o That's a reeeeeally recent knife - note the 12/13/11 date on the card!

Placement of the lbs would have been less obtrusive if it was placed under the end of the pocket clip, also as someone suggested if it was polished SS maybe?

...less obtrusive if it was placed under the end of the pocket clip...

You're onto something there. It may be a viable option to position it where the pocket clip contacts the knife and provides friction for retention in the pocket. In that case it should be enlarged for smooth drawing.
