After reading this post I decided to finally make a decision about a Ti framelock once and for all.
The 2009 Benchmade catalog was a real snoozer this year again, (whats up with those guys?), and I had decided to go for a Bradley Alias 1 since Benchmade doesnt want my business anymore.. This of course would be a step down from a Umnum or a Strider and I knew I would always be thinking what if I had gotten one of those instead?
So, I took the plunge.
I bought a SNG-GG.
I choose this knife over a CRK for a couple of reasons.
First, to me, CRKs, especially Sebbies, are really unattractive knives. The decorated ones are better, but then the price is up there with a good Strider anyway. I cant ignore the square blocky slab sides no matter how dressed up they are. Umnums are more egronomic and prettier than Sebs but still pretty plain. However, if I ever considered buying a CRK folder, the Umnum would be my first choice for sure, especially for the handle shape. But if I spend big bucks on a knife, I either want it to look pretty, or rugged or both. To me, the Umnum doesnt really look that rugged or pretty.
Second, the CRKs dont have a Hinderer frame lock stop. I doubt I would ever bend the stop out too far anyway, but it is a mark against the design in my book, and Im the one buying the knife, so that counts.
The earlier Striders were also kinda ugly. They have a really serious look about them though. The SNG-GG has the dimpled sides which really change the character of the knife. It still looks all business but is also attractive. If CRK offered this GG option I might buy one. Frankly the SNG-GG will garner a lot more attention than a CRK folder ever would.
The Strider handles feel better in my hand. I also like the blade grind and shape better on the Striders. As far as choils go, if they are designed right, I like 'em.
Striders and CRKs are both as tough as they come. I would never worry about breaking either one, so whos toughest isnt an issue. Every BM Axis lock I have is way beyond tough too.
I also considered a ZT 0300 but I didnt want the spring assist. I have Kershaws with the speedsafe system. Im not knocking them, I just dont like having to use two hands or another object to close them. I want to be able to close a knife one-handed quickly and easily and speedsafes inhibit this. Had the ZT offered an option of no spring assist I would have seriously considered a ZT 0300.
Extrema Ratio knives are very good designs as are Crusader Forge folders. I dont want to mess with any warranty issues with a foreign company though. The Strider guarantee is local. Strider user experience is widespread in the USA. The European makers base is few and far between here.
Hinderer? I hear they exist. Maybe someday they will be readily available on the market. Or not
Just my reasons to buy a Strider, take it or leave it. No hard feelings.
