Umnumzaan vs SnG

I think you might have answered your own question...

"I do admit that I like the "tactical" styling of the Striders a bit more"

It comes down to what appeals to you, even if you can't explain the attraction to one knife over the other.

I went through the same process a year ago, but when it came time to choose between the two, I selected the SnG. I just liked the SnG more.

A year later, I'm still happy with my choice.

Are you talking about the Sebenza or the Umznumnznzmznznan? You're talking about both like they're the same knife.

I have a Strider SMF and a CRK Sebenza. While they are both very tough knives the Sebenza is an everyday carry and the the SMF stays in my backpack for camping, etc.

I would every day carry the Strider PT CC and have one on order and I would definitely carry the Umnamzummer (whatever) it is a great looking knife and seems very well made and suited for everyday or a suit, but not for the wilderness.

I like to have some options for different situations.

I disagree.
I remember when quality knives actually weighed something.
NOW, people whine like 6 ounces will throw their back out.

I agree with stabman. I bought an Alias II to check out the quality and have a small frame lock folder. I never carry it anymore. I like a heavy blade in my pocket and sometimes carry two. All four of my Sebs are Large as well as my other folders. I'm betting my custom Sebby weighs between 7-8 ounces now with G-10 Scales and Spanto M2 Blade. My favorite!

I have an umnumzaan and I love it. One because it packs so much blade in a not seemingly huge knife. It carries awesome inthe pocket and is ROCK solid

Could you post a picture of your custom sebby please?

As soon as my computer is up I will gladly post some pics. I am using the business computer and its a real hit and miss when I can have access to it.

After reading this post I decided to finally make a decision about a Ti framelock once and for all.

The 2009 Benchmade catalog was a real snoozer this year again, (what’s up with those guys?), and I had decided to go for a Bradley Alias 1 since Benchmade doesn’t want my business anymore.. This of course would be a step down from a Umnum or a Strider and I knew I would always be thinking ‘what if I had gotten one of those instead?”

So, I took the plunge.

I bought a SNG-GG.

I choose this knife over a CRK for a couple of reasons.

First, to me, CRK’s, especially Sebbies, are really unattractive knives. The decorated ones are better, but then the price is up there with a good Strider anyway. I can’t ignore the square blocky slab sides no matter how dressed up they are. Umnums are more egronomic and prettier than Sebs but still pretty plain. However, if I ever considered buying a CRK folder, the Umnum would be my first choice for sure, especially for the handle shape. But if I spend big bucks on a knife, I either want it to look pretty, or rugged or both. To me, the Umnum doesn’t really look that rugged or pretty.

Second, the CRKs don’t have a Hinderer frame lock stop. I doubt I would ever bend the stop out too far anyway, but it is a mark against the design in my book, and I’m the one buying the knife, so that counts.

The earlier Striders were also kinda ugly. They have a really serious look about them though. The SNG-GG has the dimpled sides which really change the character of the knife. It still looks all business but is also attractive. If CRK offered this GG option I might buy one. Frankly the SNG-GG will garner a lot more attention than a CRK folder ever would.

The Strider handles feel better in my hand. I also like the blade grind and shape better on the Striders. As far as choils go, if they are designed right, I like 'em.

Striders and CRK’s are both as tough as they come. I would never worry about breaking either one, so ‘who’s toughest’ isn’t an issue. Every BM Axis lock I have is way beyond tough too.

I also considered a ZT 0300 but I didn’t want the spring assist. I have Kershaws with the speedsafe system. I’m not knocking them, I just don’t like having to use two hands or another object to close them. I want to be able to close a knife one-handed quickly and easily and speedsafes inhibit this. Had the ZT offered an option of no spring assist I would have seriously considered a ZT 0300.

Extrema Ratio knives are very good designs as are Crusader Forge folders. I don’t want to mess with any warranty issues with a foreign company though. The Strider guarantee is local. Strider user experience is widespread in the USA. The European makers base is few and far between here.

Hinderer? I hear they exist. Maybe someday they will be readily available on the market. Or not…

Just my reasons to buy a Strider, take it or leave it. No hard feelings.
