Of course they're great "stock," but being such a great platform for pimping it's inevitable that we'll take our chances with warranties in order to personalize our Kwaikens. And with the popularity of these knives over the past year and a half, a thread containing modified examples will certainly serve as an inspiration for others.

Whether yours is a folder or flipper, let's see 'em!

Boker Kwaiken flipper anatomy lesson, anyone?

I finally got around to modding my flipper this weekend, and thought I'd pass along some information to others contemplating the same.

The IKBS pivot takes a T-9 torx bit:

Using the wife's embosser/heat gun helped to loosen any threadlocker/loctite on the threads. This will help to keep those torx bolts looking nice. There wasn't much added by the factory, by the way. You will see some signs of it in pictures below:

Thanks to Rubio's for helping me keep the Kwaiken's parts in check:

The other torx bolts are T-6s (almost feels like a T-5.5 would've been better, but heating a little bit makes it easy):

Different length T-6s:

Keeping them all straight:

One titanium handle removed:

Other bolts on the non-clip side seem the same length, but just to be sure I've marked them:

Pivot pushes out fairly easily:

Backspacer is held in by more torx bolts (some dried threadlocker is visible here):

The bolts were quite loosely seated:

Here's where the fun starts--the IKBS system. As you may already know, the ball bearings (20 per side) are held by a sticky grease. Notice there are a couple on the liner on the right:

Another good use for a container--holding the 40 bbs:

That about does it. Altogether I had zero problems taking the Kwaiken flipper apart. No marred torx bits whatsoever, and no other surprises. Easy. I think I counted 59 parts; 60 if you count the detent ball bearing separately.

By the way, in case you were wondering the only titanium parts are the handles (2) and the backspacer (1). I thought the clip might be ti, but it's magnetic, so ... no dice.

In order to get this thread going, I am pasting some photos I've collected from this forum and other places of Boker Kwaikens as well as "real" ones from Lucas Burnley. Many great examples, for sure. If one of them is yours, let us know.

Holy smokes...I guess I'm going to be placing an order for one of these bad boys. Thanks for posting those pics..

By the way, you may be interested to hear that Cuscadi.de will be getting into the Kwaiken game. I emailed Luke in December, and he expects them to have items (presumably scales and backspacers) for both of the Bokers (flipper and folder) beginning this month. I just installed a smooth carbon fiber backspacer of his in my Spyderco Techno, and am excited to see what they come up with.

It will be nice to have stocked scale options rather than having to send off the knives for custom work with long turnarounds. Hopefully others (Alexander Dietz, Rival, etc.) will start stocking them, too.

I bought the first release version a few weeks back of the exchange here. Knowing the issues that plagued the first run I was looking forward to trying the "Flipper Mod". To me it was near impossible to use the thumb disk so the mod was just a natural thing to do

Here are some of the sellers pictures (dark wood background) he sent me allowing for some before and after photos showing the difference. The main difference from before and after is the frame near the thumb disk.

After the mod, which in total took me about two hours the blade deployment was a HUGE difference ;)

The lock up was fine prior to the mod but became even earlier after the mod was completed.

Some additional pic's showing the recess cut up close allowing the base/tang of the blade to be exposed ala the "Flipper" mod...

I wanted to be sure the "Shadow" of the scale versus the frame was as close to factory as possible...overall I was pleased with the final results

Additional pictures of blade centering, which is near perfect...

And, of course the "Serial Number" shot :o

In a "Nut Shell" I love this knife!!! It's slim yet fills the hand. It's one of the easiest to deploy knives I own when it comes to working outdoors with lined leather gloves.

Very nice work, there. Do you have issues with the blade tip nipping your fingers when closed?

As mentioned on other threads, my first one (green micarta) had a bad detent, and I could tap the blade open a couple millimeters. Returned it and bought the orange g10-scaled "Blade HQ" version. Quality was way better on that one, but it still could nip a bit. Was going to flipper mod that knife and address the tip, but once I received the flipper, I knew I had found the best version for me. Everything arrived dare I say perfect on the flipper. Here they were together:

If I had kept and modded the Blade HQ one, I would've done something like this (posted by another member):

It does have the blade nip issue if I purposely drag my finger over it but haven't had it be a day to day issue.

I saw your vid on how the detent would allow the blade to fall with just a simple tap...

Glad all was resolved. A flipper version is in the near future...

Thats it I'm ordering the Ti version and og version. I'm gonna Anso grind and bronze anodize the Ti with an acid bathe and stonewash to blade and liners and make some red c-tek for the og. Wish me luck.

Good luck with the project! There's not a whole lot of titanium scale depth to work with, but I look forward to seeing your results.

Here's mine at the moment:
yxw7.jpg

Since this is the first time I've acid etched and stonewashed, I inadvertently let the blade and clip stonewash too long. I'm going to re-dip tonight to try to darken the blade a bit. Both the lighter parts (that were covered in nail polish as a resist) and the darker parts will hopefully each take a darker tone while still giving me the look I was going for. This was the blade post-etch, pre-stonewash (I had actually stonewashed the blade before the etch because I removed some blade marking and logos and wanted the blade uniformly stonewashed):
r54s.jpg

Pissed that I over-stonewashed. Hopefully I can salvage it.

Also notice the stonewashed titanium handles? I darkened them with OxiClean.

A full write up will follow.

Bigfatts--nice knife. Some of those A. Dietz versions got me thinking about my own mods.
NSLST--thanks, but I really like the scales, too, and plan on keeping them on the knife.

Ended up nuking this particular example over the graffiti-splattered blade. I will get another one or two under my belt soon.
