Uncle Bill Memorial Khukri

You know (except for the Heineken cap), this idea is a keeper. With Bruise's modification, it's even better. The chiruwa handle will turn some people off, but I like it.

BTW, what I DON'T want to see this become is a shelf/safe queen. I'm pretty sure Uncle would have wanted these to be used.

IF you want it to be used, make a 18" version too. I and others have little use for the 16.5" As Bill has said over and over again the WWll khuk, and he was speaking of 18's on numerous occasions too, is the best all around.

If this gets done, after Yangdu approves at some point in the future, please allow both lengths.

thanks,

munk

I totally agree. When Bill said "It'll last 100 years", he meant it. I know i would like to take this proposed khuk with me on camping and road trips as an honored and well kept user. It would be nice to have a little bit of Uncle Bill watching my arse when i'm out in the wilds. I like the "Good stuff and thanks" in Devangari. It'll keep the grandkids guessing what it says long after I'm gone;)

Works for me. I'd get one (at least) of each.

I think its a good idea to not push on this idea for a while until everyone gets back on their feet. But I don't think its disrespectful or inappropriate to talk about it or share ideas that we have about what we would like to see. I think Uncle Bill would encourage us to at least talk about what we like, especially since we are talking khuks!

Agreed. We can kick stuff around for a while before anything actually happens.

I have a feeling the best solution may be just the general idea of a memorial khuk, then tossing it to Yangdu/Pala/kamis for interpretation. (Wait a sec....isn't "interpretation" how we ended up with the Salyan??? " :D"

...or rolling his eyes knowing how difficult it will be to get our concepts translated to the kamis. ;)

What Munk said! Great idea. Take the standard models to make it simple for the Kami's and dress them up maybe just a little bit, with special wood, or chiruwa handle as suggested, or some kind of marking or all.

Sounds good to me! But I agree with Hollow and Ferguson that we need to let things settle down a bit. There are still a ton of outstanding FF orders that will have to be dealt with, so first things first.

Regards,

Norm

If and when this gets off the ground, count me in. I can just imagine the kamis wanting to jazz up the khuks in honor of UB. It could very well turn out to be some of the best work from HI ever.

I received my memorial khuk today. Allow me to explain.

A while back I sharked a Jange on behalf of a friend. We gave it a Yvsa Receipt Inspection and the friend took possession of it. He later flogged it a bit and waved the edge. There was too much distortion to clean up with a chakma so I tried tapping it out with a mallet. The biggest wave promptly chipped out. This didn't seem normal and I wasn't comfortable with the thought of trying to grind out the damage on someone else's khuk. Since I'd been the one that had purchased it, I sent it back for replacement. We expected that it would probably take some time as it was a special item.

Later, with the friend experiencing HIKV withdrawal symptoms, we decided that I'd simply give him his money back and when the replacement Jange arrived, I'd keep it; meanwhile, he'd purchase a different khuk, as the Jange probably wasn't the right khuk for him anyway.

Uncle Bill's health took a turn for the worse and I figured that I'd wait until everything was sorted out before sending an email; Yangdu undoubtedly had enough on her mind and I already have more khuks than pegs to hang them on. By the time Uncle Bill had passed away, I'd just about forgotten it. It would arrive when it arrived.

It arrived today. The USPS's stamp said that it had left Reno on the 30th.

Had I been able to see the future, I would've sent an email saying not to worry about it, it can wait. Someone on the other end felt that it couldn't wait, evidently.

When I pick it up, I feel an odd mixture of gratitude and guilt. If any of my khuks makes me think of Bill, Yangdu, and HI, this is the one.

I'm not disagreeing with any of the suggestions...

but the thought occurs to me that

EVERY khukuri, BDC, Pen knife, Katana, etc...with "H.I." on it is a memorial to Bill Martino.

Which is as it should be. :)

The more I think about this thread the more I have the feeling that UB may have already anticipated this and given Yangdu some ideas. That would be perfectly in character for UB.

maybe we could ask JP which khukuri UB had his eye on the most (or at least fondly) when he visited him.

I may be wrong, but Uncle Bill did not design the UBE- it was a design by the Kamis to honor him.

If Yvsa says the small WWll was Bill's favorite it probably was. Bill was of fairly slight stature. He wasn't knocking many trees down in the Trailer court.

Seems like a pretty smart idea, huh? Ya better hang this one on the wall.
Then again, maybe not! What da ya think?
Thanks,

Good point. I had not looked at it quite that way.

The larger one appeals much more to me, also. You have made a great point.
An experienced chopper like yourself will be able to break me in, gentle like!
