Uncle Bill's deal of the day for Aug. 4. Pix and bargain for "perfection."

I've been out of town a lot recently and finally got to lay my hands on this beauty today. It is everything Bill had said & more. As I mentioned in an e-mail to him, like children, it's difficult to say which is your favorite but this guy is going to give my WWII strong competition for the lead.

A few features of particular note:
  • The fullers are beautifully done and, as far as my eye can tell, perfectly symmetrical.
  • I didn't notice it in the picture above, but the front bolster is unlike any I remember seeing previously. The brass meets the blade as usual, but it then continues out over the blade for a 1/4" or so, forming something like an integral habaki. In addition to looking good, it functions as a traditional habaki would & holds the blade firmly in place in the scabbard. I think it is a great feature & one I'd like to see offered as standard in the future. What do you think, uncle?
  • The scabbard is excellently done & offers what I consider to be a perfect fit. The blade moves in & out effortlessly, with very slight resistence at the curve, yet seats tightly & securely thanks to the habaki.
  • Finally, as Bill had said, the edge is near razor sharp. Just a little bit of work with a fine ceramic rod should make it wickedly sharp. I'll admit that I am fussy about my edges & it is great to see that Sanu took the extra time with this one.

It's handling characteristics also seem to be first rate but it's tough to tell within the confines of an apartment. I'll bring it to our camp next weekend and compare it a bit to my WWII. I don't know if I will be able to bring myself to use it for kindling though -- that finish is gorgeous!

I got to play with my GS at our camp this weekend & it handles beautifully. It is light enough with excellent balance allowing for very fluid movements. It's quick & easily maneuvered, capable of mid-swing directional changes. I'm still not sure if it is my overall favorite but it is neck 'n neck with my 18" WWII. Here's a pic of the two together that I thought folks might enjoy.
