While going through my stuff this evening an idea suddenly sprung to mind. To be honest with you I can't recall what exactly made me think of this, but here it is.
Uncle Bills Sliver Grippers, being all metal, have a tendency to get cold to the touch. Also, it's possible that if they are wet, I think they could be a bit difficult to hold on to.
Heat Shrink Tubing, typically used for covering exposed wires, can be used for other applications. Firesteels over time, can corrode if left unprotected. One thing you can do to protect them is to use heat shrink tubing to cover the firesteel as shown below.
The firesteel above is the same size as an Army Model Light My Fire. The particular one in the photo is the one that County Comm sells. The heat shrink I used was from a pack of assorted sizes I bought from Lowes Electrical Department some time ago. The largest heat shrink in the pack fits the firesteel and the Sliver Grippers perfectly.
Slip the tubing over the Grippers like so:
Cut to size:
Use a pair of pliers to hold the grippers while applying flame to the tubing.
Repeat for the other side:
And voila!
Upgraded Sliver Grippers.
Seems like a useful application to me, I hope you guys find it useful too.
