Unclear on availability of the 500 Duke

I'd give you a link to where I got mine but BF has some bizarre rule about "deal spotting" which I don't understand.

Received mine on saturday. Love the size as the 501 was to small and the 110 to big.

Just wish there were some more options for the handle material...may have to look into some custom ones as the rosewood is not doing it for me.

I hope one day Buck adds the 500 to the custom shop site so we can get custom 500's but for now maybe a LE on some websites.

Got two (2) 500's in the mail today. Both of them are very nice. Fit and finish is first rate and the blade tips of both knives sit in the well of the frames. Here's a picture of one of them.

I said earlier in this thread that I thought I'd carry this knife in my pocket. After handling it, I think I'll still give it a try carrying it in my pocket but it is a bit more substancial than I thought it would be. I'll just have to give it a go and see how it goes.

Very nice looking. The 500 is on my wish list along with many other Bucks.

As a possible point of interest:

The date manufactured symbol stamped on the blade on both of these knives is a half-circle (backwards C) with a dot in it. According to the charts, that is the symbol for 2012. The date on the labels on both boxes has the date 02/20/2013. Sooooo, anyone picking up just the knife with no other reference would think that the knife was made in 2012.

So, for my two knives, the blades were made in 2012 but the knives were assembled in 2013. Kinda frivilous but kinda interesting too.

Oh, there was some discussion above about the blade length of these newer knives and the older knives. The blades on both of the knives I received measure 3 1/16" .

Another fan of pocket carrying the 500. Thin profile and smooth bolsters are the key.

Ed, To shed some light on this. Those dates are easily possible as the Duke has always been mfg., not out of production. It just recently jumped from Limited Production to main production line. Perhaps with a few changes. DM

yep that 500 is a nice knife alright .. good go to meeting pocket carry I would say..
not really a work carry knife a tall ..
years ago seen a 500 dat had the blade ground down were it would not take an edge at all
gave the feller a buck for it and sent it in ...was some time around late 70's
got a nice one back but I borke the dang blade and let it go to rest ...
still a good pocket knife jest nto the best hard work knife like a 110 :)

I could carry it in jeans pockets but it would rattle around too much in my shorts pockets. I just put it on my belt when I carry it. Great knife but my only complaint is the blade finishing and the two photos earlier up thread have that same lousy finish. You can see it easily in the photos. I'm not unhappy for a $30 knife, believe me. It's just not as good a quality finish as their earlier knives from my experience and it was something I noticed right away. It's really a strong contender for my all time favorite Buck though, the 501. That's a perfect "pocket" knife for me but the 500 at just a bit bigger size is in most ways a more versatile knife that could handle some light bushcraft activities.

That's a great photo! Very helpful for comparative sizes too.
