Uncoated INFI question

The only Busse knives I have are coated. I plan to get a battle mistress but also plan to use the hell out of it for many years. The shiny bare INFI looks so so good but have any of you had corrosion start in places you can't oil..like under the grips where moisture can get trapped? I always oil an care for my blades but would bare INFI be a bad idea for a heavy use camping companion??

As long as you don't get double cut finish you should be fine

I have used INFI for years and not taken care of it, leaving it sticking in stumps over night in humid climate with no issues. You should be fine.

If you leave the handle coated, you're good. Also. The coating stays under the handles in my experience. I've never dealt with rust on my uncoated INFI. My taliwacker LE however rusts from being in the same room as moistire. It's manageable however for how awesome the blade is.

You mean bare INFI blades come coated under the grips from Busse? Sorry, I don't know s××× about the details of uncoated blades.

Never had issues with double cut. The only time I saw rust on a Busse was on a self stripped blade or comp finish when they still had the decard in them.

Also, I believe the Taliwhacker is SE101 not Infi, which rusts quite a bite easier.

Ah. I was referring to a stripped blade. My bad.

Indeed. Forgot to mention that fact. I guess my point was that even if INFI DID rust, I'd be OK with the inconvenience, as I deal with it on a blade made from "lesser" steel. 90% performance for 60% cost. Win win.

no problems here...

they get a bath after playtime, but I don't bother with oiling INFI

Holy shit!! .... I would willingly do the dishes to if I had 40 Busse blades .... damn bro, hope you have a gun safe

Whats wrong with the double cut finish? I was thinking my next Busse would be double cut but your statement makes me nervous

I have never had any rust pop up on infi. It does tarnish some, not where you can really tell it unless you wipe it down with a polish. Then you can see what comes off on the rag. Really close to what stainless steels do.

It's the ONLY infi that has rusted on me , and if u remove the rust it makes visible marks in the coat , unlike comp finish or satin which I just wipe off with some 2000 grit and it's like new

I have had bead blasted S30v and satin 440v rust easily when carrying in the pocket and sweating a lot. I never had any trouble cleaning it,a wipe down with filtz took it right off. Of coarse it had not gotten a good hold yet. The bad thing about bead blasted blades is that finish gives a lot of tiny places that contaminates and corrosive stuff can stick in.

Can someone reconcile the seemingly contradicting statements regarding double cuts rust resistance or lack thereof? I seem to remember Jerry saying that it seals the steel which I would take to mean that it helps to close it off to moisture. Maybe the dents from the media allow smaller surface rust without penetration compared to naked infi?

Double cut will rust because of the micro porous surface finish left from the media blasting. Those pores can hold moisture and don't tell on themselves till rust forms

Absolutely no problem with uncoated Infi! Its the only way to roll; satin, competition, Big, double, or stripped its all good  . Thats one of Infi's best qualities, it gives tool steel performance with 75% of the corrosion resistance of stainless as a bonus. I agree that Double cut does rust significantly faster than the others (except maybe competition), but the rust is superficial and easily removed. As Mike noted, removing the rust from double cut will leave marks, but... If its a safe queen with a little oil it will never rust, if its a user, the marks just add character!

I'm ok with users that show it! Does the staining on a double cut infi knife protect the steel like a patina or make it more susceptible to rust?

stripped & polished is the ticket with INFI...then apply "beauty marks"

any rust you might encounter at that point can be literally "wiped off"

totally agree with mach 5 about the tool steel performance with respectable corrosion resistance!
