I wanted to post a pic of the knife I worked on when I first went up to Aldo's a while back. I got a chance to get up to his shop today to and keep him busy working with me
. It was forged out of a pice of I believe with 1" or 1 1/8" (I forget) O1. OAL at the moment is 9.5" with a blade length of 4 3/4". I put the bevels on this one myself using Fred Rowe's bubble jig and have it a full flat grind (considering I never machine ground a knife I'm rather happy with the result). Anyone who has problems flat grinding, or never did it should get themselves one. This was my first time really using it and I think the bevels came out great. Luckily what would be the plunge line extends in the correct direction that I can actually put a straight plunge line in. Had it angled toward the handle area I would've been in a bad spot.
I didn't cut the plunge lines in because I was worried about messing them up on the grinder, so I'll just do them with a file. I did most of the forging on my own with a bit of help from Aldo at times when things got a bit outta whack... he basically whacked them back in. There wasn't a major game plan going into it originally, it was more of a "bang steel and see what happens" kind of thing originally. Once it looked like something that wasn't too horrible we looked at how to turn it into something resembling a knife. Originally the tip was longer and opted to grind it back a bit.
It probably would've made more sense to do a hidden tang but again I still know nothing and opted to try and somehow make it a full tang. Rather than try to add yet another aspect of knife making I've never done before.
Still has a long way to go, I'm going to soak the handle part in vinegar to get the decarb off. Then put the plunge lines in, shape the handle a bit more, etc etc. Also got the ball rolling (forging) on what hopefully will be a nice bowie knife one day. So at the moment I still haven't made a complete knife but somehow I managed to wind up having now 4 of them going at not only various stages of completion, but also various knife making techniques. Thanks again to Aldo for taking the time
