Maglites are one of those brandname products that everyone knows and just about everyone can trust to hold up well and work for years. They are kind of like Buck Knives. Just like the trusty ol' 110, there are "better" things out there with fancy doodads and space age materials, but any maglite will do the job faithfully everytime. I carry a big 4D black mag under the seat of my truck and usually have a little 2AA mini mag with me at work. I just got a 3D mag from my grandfather for my birthday. I really didn't need one, but he was so proud of it. You could tell that he felt really good about getting his grandson something that would serve him for years to come. I never really gave the 3D's much thought,b ut now that i have one it just feels like it's the perfect size. Very portable and useful to say the least.
I didn't really think about it until this thread, but a good flashlight can mean a world of difference in a bad situation. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago my fiance and I were going on spring break down in New Orleans. My first thought was to pack a big honkin knife. Then the news started talking about terrorists targeting "soft targets" as this was around the time of the Bali attack. What good would a big honkin knife do me if the French Quarter was falling in around my ears? Instead of the big knife I grabbed a multi-tool and my mini-mag. I figured that if the SHTF, then a good light would be worth it's weight in gold.

One thing I just do not "get." Why doesn't Maglight make the 2AA with an LED? (Yes, you can convert it -- at a price 2-3x cost of flashlight.) I would think that would be a real winner in the market. (Not as good as a unconcealed carry, to be sure. :D )

Good point Thomas. LED's are the way to go in the small lights IMO. I have one that Princton tec made that Uses 4 AAA's IIRC and is very bright--it also does not eat batteries the way a minimag would.

The light to make sure you have is a head lamp. I have a MYO 5 by Petzl that has a 5 LED strip and a Xenon adjustable flood/spot on top. Can't beat it for work that needs two hands!

Bill,

When I was doing security in the environments that might require some instantly available force, I usually carried my maglite just as you describe- 'course, I think I used my first finger to activate the switch.

With good batteries, I have come to believe my 2-cell is usually better in most respects than my 5-cell (C).

Princeton makes a 1 watt led headlamp with a 3 led strip on the side now. :)

Silver 4-cell in my brief case for about 4 years now.

I like the 2 mag light nunchuk Idea (heehee)

Back in the 80s I worked in security at a Las Vegas - style dinner theater/comedy club. The only weapon I carried was a mini mag, I practiced using it as a kubaton with a friend that was a cop (on his suggestion). After 2 1/2 years, never had to use it, I was good at verbal persuasion.

I carry a 6 C cell mag lite. It works great as a "persuasion" tool. About 16" long and a little lighter than the 4D light.

Also currently have a 4D and a 3D mag lite as well. All of the mag lites I've had over the years were well made and worth the money paid for them.

I keep a 4D Maglite mounted in brackets under my desk in the office.

Still got a 6 D cell Kel-Lite: the original "Mace-With-A-Light" rescue tool. A couple swings and you can pull him out of the car through the window. It's semi retired as no parts are available.

Back in the 70's I was doing my internship at Adult Parole and Probation in Reno. Anyway, for some reason when I made a home visit, I'd invariably hear someone's toilet flushing. Well, Dan'l Boone had his "Old Betsy", and I had my "Old Ex-Lax". Bet I could have bought a new car with the money flushed down the drain.

Mag Lite may have had the C cell baton light, I can't remember. 6 C cells or even 5 works for me.

Course now I have a FRN covered piece of galvanized pipe that I carry as a cane. Do a Google search for Mendowood Canes. Strolled into the hospital leaning on it, and nobody batted an eye. Hell, nobody noticed the bulge in my front pocket for that matter, so I guess the holster kept it from printing.
