While we are discussing the merits and lack thereoff of the S&W folders, what DO you guys consider to be the best of the under-$30 blades? I am thinking along the lines of Gerber, Kershaw (some), Buck (again, some), Schrade, etc. Just curious which ones you find worthy - and why?

Anything Byrd. Good quality, good fit and finish.
Ka Bar's Doziers and BM Pika not bad for the price
$30 also gets you a Spyderco Dragonfly

Buck Pilot,Buck Mantis, Buck Hilo, Buck Bantam, Byrds, Benchmade Pika and Benchmade Monochrome, Ka-Bar Doziers. All very good.

I have plenty of Bucks and Schrades from years ago when I couldn't afford better. They were always good enough for what I did with them. They just had to be sharpened more frequently than the knives I buy today. I've purchased a few more Bucks recently and it seems that the fit and finish isn't quite what it was 25 years ago, but the blade steel may actually be a bit better tempered.

I've got a 2 byrds, and for the money they are great. Sharp as a razor them Byrds be.

Kershaw Vapor
Opinel (various numbers)
Frosts or Eriksson Moras (such as #1 Moras)
Buck Chinese and American slipjoints

This is a very good knife **if it fits your hand** I love mine and wish I would have gotten one long ago.

Camullis seems to have gotten the heat treat on AUS8a just right.

My votes:

various Buck knives, probably more good knives in that range than any other company
A few of the AG Russell models, the Hunters Scalpel and Woodswalker for instance.
Opinel, of course. You can buy a set of ten for $60.
CRKT has many high-style designs that would otherwise be unaffordable to most buyers.
SAKs, if you like them.
Schrade Old Timers, many models can be bought on the secondary markets for under $30.
Vintage Bruckmann knives. Common on eBay, often for $30 or less. Very good quality, and a true bargain price for pre-WWII German craftsmanship.

And most importantly, if you are patient and bargain-shop there are some incredible blades for $30 closeout. Two of mine that were $30, an Effingham Ek Bowie and a 6" Camillus CUDA CQB.
