Underwhelmed by iPad 2 Announcement?

Apple is smart. Make something nice but leave out some gravy.. Make another in a few months, sweeten it a bit but leave some for the next new one. People just go crazy for the next one!!

Ideologies aside, the iPad 2 is nothing new and amazing, but a respectable step forward for the tablet market. Come holiday season, Apple will probably redesign it to cash in on the holiday shoppers, make a crazy amount of money, and repeat the process next year.

I'm an Apple guy, own many "iDevices", and enjoy all of them. Apple is a business, has effective marketing, and makes a great quality product, but they're no different from the rest of the tech companies out there. It's all about margins...

the only big news here is the upgrade from the A4 processor to the A5. The change to a dual core processor was a good decision, but I will be interested to see how it stacks up to Nvidia's Tegra 2. Considering that Tegra 3 is slated for release in just a few months sporting a 1.5ghz quad core CPU that can blast out full 60fps blu-ray video, Apple is gonna need something big up their sleeves in the fall if they want to remain competitive performance-wise. Personally, I expect they won't be able to keep up, but will probably outsell everyone anyway because they are the pinnacle of hipster fashion :barf:

Yeah, full 60 FPS 1080P video isn't an impressive figure, especially when a lot depends on the codec and if you have hardware decoding. What good is a relatively powerful chip in a device you aren't using to do powerful things? Other then suck battery that is.

Because when you have a device capable of doing powerful things, you can accomplish more with it. Not everyone buys a tablet to be hip, some people would like to use them for more than facebook and twitter. Between advances in mobile broadband and battery tech, tablets with decent processing power will be able to do anything a PC can. Its about more than just video playback. Tegra 3 will be able to process nearly 14 million instructions per second, 3 times what the brand new Ipad 2 can do. Just because you would never make use of that power doesn't mean other people won't. It's called progress.

You're battery life will still be shit.

You're battery life will still be shit.

Actually by shrinking the manufacturing process from 40 nanometers to 28 and optimizing the architecture of the chip, its not only going to be more powerful, but more efficient as well. Of course performing complex tasks will always consume more power than sitting around in standby, but whats the point of carrying around a 10 inch tablet that can't do anything more than my phone does already?

Personally I want a tablet that is powerful and versatile, capable of doing anything a full blown PC can do. A few years ago that would have sounded like a pipe dream, but with all the advances they've made to chip architecture, battery life, mobile broadband, and particularly cloud computing, it will be a reality sooner than many would think possible.

Next time, if I have to go to the trouble of edits, I may as well infract all of you, and close the thread.

You really should know by now we don't want political discussions outside the Political Arena.

Because a phone (due to size) cannot do everything a 10" tablet can do.

(1) What does cloud computing have to do with anything we are discussing?
(2) You won't have a tablet that can do everything a PC can do, not in the next 2-3 years at least. Simply due to available modes of input, without a keyboard and a keyboard efficient OS you won't have a tablet that matches the power of a full computer.

I only mention Cloud Computing because it is the future for low power consumption devices (like tablets and netbooks). With all the graphic rendering and physics computed server-side, any device capable of streaming HD video will be able to play the most advanced games, or run CPU intensive software that would otherwise require expensive infrastructure. Companies are already offering cloud services for gaming, storage, business/productivity, communication, etc. According to PC Magazine, over 70% of Microsoft employees are already working on Cloud related projects.

As for input, you're completely right about that, a touchscreen is a woefully inadequate form of input. It's the reason I prefer netbooks and laptops over tablets, but if someone is dead set on getting full functionality out of a tablet they can always buy a bluetooth travel keyboard/mouse

In any event, it should be interesting to see how the things develop over the next few years. I'm glad Nvidia and Android are pushing the boundaries and attempting to challenge Apple's dominance in in the tablet market. If nothing else I would think that Apple lovers and haters can all agree that competition breeds innovation, which benefits us all

That's not the "cloud." "Cloud" is a buzzword thrown around by companies because it's the new term of the year. What does "cloud" really mean in this context? Basically browser based applications that aren't dependent on the system environment. Will gaming or other CPU intensive software be moved to the new model? Some, but performance will always suffer because you have protocol overhead to deal.

I can agree with this, though I don't think they are challenging Apple's dominance yet. I think that they are playing a serious game of catch-up at the moment. I would say the Xoom (hate that name) is the first real competition for the iPad.

Hmm, 2x as fast and graphics are 9x faster, thinner, with the same battery life. Two cameras, HDMI out, will allow streaming from iTunes to it - SAME PRICE.

3G model works on AT&T and Verizon.

What else would you want it to do that any other tablets can do?

Oh, and there is the 65,000 apps available for it.

The only thing I would have liked to see is a higher res screen. I have the 64GB and never use all of it. Most people get along with the 16Gb just fine.

Just saying I thought it addressed most of the missing features from the original.
I've never really followed Apple's products, but 9X faster graphics card? as in eg Core + memory + shader clock increased by 900%? If so Apple must have been really holding out on you or something because the new graphics card produced each year such as ATI and Nvidia cards only improve clock speed by maybe 20-30%....

I have the first iPad, and I really LOVE the 'tablet' experience. That said, I'm NOT in love with Apple's controlling ways:

My own website shows 6000 Gallery images and it uses a Adobe Flash architecture. I can't show ONE photo to anyone with my iPad. :thumbdn:

I don't CARE that it's an old standard and uses battery life. My iPad has never gone below 65%. It's insignificant to me. What's significant is for me to show my work, not pronounce how up to date my website is, or isn't.

Showing photos and organizing photo albums on my iPad? I have to have an exact duplicate order in a folder on my home Mac (orPC) which I synch to. In this exact order. Huh? I have to do this all on my desktop and synch it (iTunes) to match. Another BAH!

Synching a calendar to MS Entourage (not Mac's Mail) is filled with duplicates and mistakes.

So.... Once the competition gets its act together, I will be looking to another tablet more compatible to MY needs.

All that said, I am still quite pleased with the iPad and carry it daily.

The most amazing thing I find about my macs and Iphone is how they never crash, run flawlessly and i've never had a virus? Oh, I can run windows on my Macbook Pro as well.

Many uninformed opinions here. Apple's iPad 2 is the next step in personal computing. For anyone who still feels like the iPad is just a large iPod Touch, go play with one for a few hours. It's much more than that.

The iPad series represents where personal computing is headed. Sure the Motorola Xoom is a great device, but the learning curve is far steeper, relegating it's market to those who are already computer savvy. Apple makes democratic products. They are easy to use to most everyone.

There is no sheep following the herd. Apple has a fan base because of the tremendous hardware/software/OS connection they've harvested. You can walk into a nice store with intelligent sales clerks and have your iPhone replaced immediately if there is a problem. Try that with your HP laptop. Try that with your Dell Adamo.

Come on guys, an apple a day keeps the doctor away!

This is my attitude as well. I bought an iPad last year, and it does some things well, but the lack of compatibility bothers me MUCH more than I thought it would. It is also shackled to old things that don't make any sense to me. Why should I have to go to a site called iTunes to start up my software and back up my computer? That makes no sense to me, I'm not listening to music. I know, it's a throwback to the "old" days, but I don't care, it makes as much sense to me as using the start button to turn off the computer, ala microsoft...

Being an old Unix programmer, jailbreaking my iPad was one of the first things I did, I can't stand being controlled. I wasn't impressed by the people who work at the stores, they know a little about Apple, but couldn't answer any of my in-depth questions when I was trying to determine compatibility. Oh well.

I bought my iPad for a very unusual purpose - so I could day trade stocks anywhere I happened to be. It works pretty well for that.

Why jailbreak an iPad? I can understand feeling constrained by iTunes/App Store, but is there really enough great services that won't play ball with Apple to remove yourself from the protection/vetting/quality control process that Apple provides?

There isn't an app for everything that I want, plus I wanted to poke around in it and see how much customization I could do. Plus, it's fun! :D
