Apple is smart. Make something nice but leave out some gravy.. Make another in a few months, sweeten it a bit but leave some for the next new one. People just go crazy for the next one!!

the only big news here is the upgrade from the A4 processor to the A5. The change to a dual core processor was a good decision, but I will be interested to see how it stacks up to Nvidia's Tegra 2. Considering that Tegra 3 is slated for release in just a few months sporting a 1.5ghz quad core CPU that can blast out full 60fps blu-ray video, Apple is gonna need something big up their sleeves in the fall if they want to remain competitive performance-wise. Personally, I expect they won't be able to keep up, but will probably outsell everyone anyway because they are the pinnacle of hipster fashion :barf:
Yeah, full 60 FPS 1080P video isn't an impressive figure, especially when a lot depends on the codec and if you have hardware decoding. What good is a relatively powerful chip in a device you aren't using to do powerful things? Other then suck battery that is.
Because when you have a device capable of doing powerful things, you can accomplish more with it. Not everyone buys a tablet to be hip, some people would like to use them for more than facebook and twitter. Between advances in mobile broadband and battery tech, tablets with decent processing power will be able to do anything a PC can. Its about more than just video playback. Tegra 3 will be able to process nearly 14 million instructions per second, 3 times what the brand new Ipad 2 can do. Just because you would never make use of that power doesn't mean other people won't. It's called progress.
You're battery life will still be shit.
Actually by shrinking the manufacturing process from 40 nanometers to 28 and optimizing the architecture of the chip, its not only going to be more powerful, but more efficient as well. Of course performing complex tasks will always consume more power than sitting around in standby, but whats the point of carrying around a 10 inch tablet that can't do anything more than my phone does already?
Personally I want a tablet that is powerful and versatile, capable of doing anything a full blown PC can do. A few years ago that would have sounded like a pipe dream, but with all the advances they've made to chip architecture, battery life, mobile broadband, and particularly cloud computing, it will be a reality sooner than many would think possible.
I only mention Cloud Computing because it is the future for low power consumption devices (like tablets and netbooks). With all the graphic rendering and physics computed server-side, any device capable of streaming HD video will be able to play the most advanced games, or run CPU intensive software that would otherwise require expensive infrastructure. Companies are already offering cloud services for gaming, storage, business/productivity, communication, etc. According to PC Magazine, over 70% of Microsoft employees are already working on Cloud related projects.
In any event, it should be interesting to see how the things develop over the next few years. I'm glad Nvidia and Android are pushing the boundaries and attempting to challenge Apple's dominance in in the tablet market. If nothing else I would think that Apple lovers and haters can all agree that competition breeds innovation, which benefits us all
I've never really followed Apple's products, but 9X faster graphics card? as in eg Core + memory + shader clock increased by 900%? If so Apple must have been really holding out on you or something because the new graphics card produced each year such as ATI and Nvidia cards only improve clock speed by maybe 20-30%....Hmm, 2x as fast and graphics are 9x faster, thinner, with the same battery life. Two cameras, HDMI out, will allow streaming from iTunes to it - SAME PRICE.
3G model works on AT&T and Verizon.
What else would you want it to do that any other tablets can do?
Oh, and there is the 65,000 apps available for it.
The only thing I would have liked to see is a higher res screen. I have the 64GB and never use all of it. Most people get along with the 16Gb just fine.
Just saying I thought it addressed most of the missing features from the original.
I have the first iPad, and I really LOVE the 'tablet' experience. That said, I'm NOT in love with Apple's controlling ways:
My own website shows 6000 Gallery images and it uses a Adobe Flash architecture. I can't show ONE photo to anyone with my iPad. :thumbdn:
I don't CARE that it's an old standard and uses battery life. My iPad has never gone below 65%. It's insignificant to me. What's significant is for me to show my work, not pronounce how up to date my website is, or isn't.
Showing photos and organizing photo albums on my iPad? I have to have an exact duplicate order in a folder on my home Mac (orPC) which I synch to. In this exact order. Huh? I have to do this all on my desktop and synch it (iTunes) to match. Another BAH!
Synching a calendar to MS Entourage (not Mac's Mail) is filled with duplicates and mistakes.
So.... Once the competition gets its act together, I will be looking to another tablet more compatible to MY needs.
All that said, I am still quite pleased with the iPad and carry it daily.
Coop
Being an old Unix programmer, jailbreaking my iPad was one of the first things I did, I can't stand being controlled. I wasn't impressed by the people who work at the stores, they know a little about Apple, but couldn't answer any of my in-depth questions when I was trying to determine compatibility. Oh well.
