Uneven grind on BK7

Well as my post says, the coating of my blade was flaking off instead of the smooth wear I am used to on my coated blades. My only guess is that there must have been some problem with how the coating on my knife was applied. Unless this to is a common occurance.

The coating flaking off has nothing to do with how the knife was heat treated. It would flake off if it didn't bond properly to the blade which could be the result of tons of things such as the surface not being properly cleaned before the coating was applied but not because the heat treat is bad.

Which angle are you using? If it's 30, then I want to back up what has been posted already. Reprofiling on the Sharpmaker can be hard without the diamond stones.

It can take awhile with the diamond rods as well.
The key is keeping the rods clean(washing at 60-80 strokes per side) and patience, patience, patience.
The Sharpmaker is fantastic for keeping an edge tuned up and sharp.
For reprofiling...well... it works, but can be very time consuming.
The final result is fantastic though! Especially with the ultra fine rods.
The diamond rods are a must have for reprofiling on the Sharpmaker. I would not consiser doing it with the Medium rods.

I have had a similar problem with my kabar bk7. I stripped the knife with jasco and started to grind down the main bevels on the face. the left side of the knife (when holding it in the right hand) wasn't so bad. but the right side has really deep grind marks and the blade edge does waver on the last three inches. big dissapointment to me since I was aiming for a higher polish. I know my reply is late but better than never I guess

Both of my 11's are off, one has the tip sharpened off to one side but both are good enough, the one with the off center tip is the sharpest of my little Beckers. I did have one that I had to send back. Pretty sure that one had been a return that someone worked on then returned, that got sent to me.

My 14s and 9 are perfect, though.

I'm sure you'll be happy in the end.

 With what, may I ask? An angle grinder? Dremel? Belt sander? Bench grinder? Of course you couldn't make it smooth. But that's not Kabar's fault. Not the best first post, if I may say so.

And it's better not to bring back a thread after a year. Just start a new one at that point.
