uneven grind strikes again

I just got this knife yesterday. It has a mismatching grind that's very noticeable on the spine. Here are some cell phone photos I took.

On one side the grind ends 27mm from the tip, on the other side it ends 22cm from the tip. I'm tempted to return it for an exchange. What would you do?

Depends. What kind of knife is it? The "looking for 5 mm of bad tolerance" kind, or the kind you use to cut things?

I never measured, but I honestly think I've had more knives that were unevenly ground than not. And I've got a decent number of mid-techs and a few customs. I'm not too worried though, I use/carry all the ones I keep.

it's a boker plus kwaiken. Honestly I have many knives for cutting, this one is for collecting (dust). =)

If, to you, it's a collector piece, then I'd send it back. If it's a user...I wouldn't. I cant see how that would affect cutting performance.

I would sharpen it! If you do send it back for a replacement, just make sure to ask them to hand pick an extra nice one for you ;)

I haven't measured......but about every knife i own has that same issue. Some much worse than others. What's my point? Ya might get lucky and get one closer in matching....but the odds aren't all that good I'll bet. I could be wrong though. Won't be the first or last time.

You're probably the only one who would ever notice it, and it will cut just fine. I'd either return it, or just forget about it.

I have a few knives that have near perfect to perfect grinds and they are customs.....Production knives, not so much. I bet that out of 100 Boker Plus Kwaiken's only zero would be flawless.

I returned a spyderco Gayle bradley with this same issue. It was .050" off from one side to the other in relation to the spydie hole. Very visible to the naked eye.

I really like the way you worded that

So true. :sorrow:

I noticed it because Kwaiken's design has the spine flush with the liner, so I really enjoy looking at it when it is closed.

Maybe I should send it to Boker USA directly. This dealer has been very good and it's not their fault this brand new knife has a bad grind.

I think the OP means the "primary grind" (I don't know the correct term for this part), 5mm is a heck of a lot off, I'd send it back.

Yes, its the primary grind. Personally I would not care but if it bothers you send it back (assuming they consider it out of spec and eligible for a trade for a new one)

It does not seem like it is a huge deal for the price and use for this knife. It does kind of frustrate you when you notice details about that, but it is a Boker Plus knife made overseas and you can get many imperfections.

Thanks for contributing your thoughts. I'll stare at it some more and see if it really bothers me.

I have a $300.00 folder made by a purported special forces Rambo who's name will remain anonymous, that was sent back twice because the frame lock barely engaged, and suffered from blade play, and finally, on the 3rd replacement, I get no blade play, the frame lock is rock solid and engaged, but the blade grind is similar to yours. Thankfully, this knife, while never discounted, can be bought on special order at the Navy Exchange for a mere pittance, and that's the only reason I bought it.
