Unexpected Knifenut at Family Christmas Dinner

I went up to my MIL's for Christmas dinner. My niece brought her new boyfriend with her. First good sign is that he walked in carrying beer. Good beer, Racer 5.

Anyways i noticed that he opens his beer with one of those key holders that holds the keys like a multibladed pocket knife. He had one of the CF ones. One thing led to another and it turns out that he had a neck knife on him. I showed him my Spyderco Cat (that got chased for my Christmas Day EDC). All downhill from there.

Quite fortunately I had on of my modded Ontario knives with me since my wife and I were in charge of food prep. I was using it to chop shallots when I had to go and deal with some other stuff. So I handed the knife to him and told him "have fun!". He really liked using it.

Meeting another knife nut made my day!

Hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas Day too.

Cool story - nice to run into another knife fan.

I have only surreptitiously run into one other knife fan when one of my students, during the knife lecture, produced a CRK Sebenza! You don't see that everyday outside of the forum.

I have cultivated my own knife fans; my son, daughter, daughter in law, son in law, granddaughters, nieces and nephews all have knives from Pop Pop.... ;^)

Yep, always cool to meet another knife knut (or multi-tool, flashlight, G-Shock nut, etc.). Thanks for sharing the story.

I'm always trying to grow the ranks, too, by gifting knives, MT's, and flashlights for Christmas. Most sheeple have no idea how freakin' useful these items are until someone gives them one and they start carrying and using it. I have converted several friends and family members, and that feels good too.

The kids and I are taking care of the neighbors pets while they're away. In the kitchen I saw they had a SAK cadet and an Opinel #8,,, good taste,, even for Vegans :D. They're good folk.. Plus he has good taste in Bourbon,, 2/3 ain't bad

I overheard my uncle talking about how he recently started carrying a pocket knife, and he couldn't believe how useful it is! He uses it all the time for various things. So I walked over and showed him my digi-cam PM2. Then my brother pulled out his brown Rat 2, followed by my dad and his brown Tenacious. He loved all three of 'em. (I bought all three of 'em, LOL). Anyhow, he had a SAK of some type. Med sized, traditional red scales. Was a fun conversation. Turns out he uses a smaller SAK, but this one he bought for the grandson (my cousin's son) who is 7. He's hanging on to it 'till Max is old enough to use it unsupervised. Fun stuff, lol.

My uncle is a great dude that loves tools - he's a retired carpenter and builds all sorts of cool things in his spare time. Looks like I'll be buying him a knife next. I honestly have more fun buying them for others. I don't have a reason to buy him anything, but I think a Persistence would be perfect. :thumb up:

Almost forgot - I gifted a Spyderco Santoku, 6" serrated 'utility knife' and Kershaw kitchen sheers to my sister and her husband, and my brother and his GF. I've definitely gifted more knives than I've purchased for myself. Ha.

One of the regulars at my work caught me by surprise when I saw: not one, but TWO Microtech scarab clips, one in either front pocket. I remarked on how it was neat that they had become legal carry recently (Oklahoma: Thank you Mr. Ritter!) and I happened to have my ProTech TR4.1 on me. We chatted up a storm and I eventually had to break it off to, you know, work, and stuff. Cool guy.

Good story  I don't normally see anyone around here carrying knives, and when I do they are normally cheapos.... But about two weeks ago I saw a customer at work in a very nice business suit carrying a Spyderco, was real nice to see someone carrying something other then a cheapo

I thought I was going to have a similar experience at work last year. Got stuck training the new kid, odd since my route(armored carrier) started at 3am, and one of the first things he asked was what sort of knife I carried.

A knife inquiry right out the gate! Great! I showed him the Spyderco Native 5 I carried at the time and he said he'd never heard of Spyderco. I should've known what was coming next at that point...

Dual blades for that ultimate tactical advantage! There was no talking him out of it either. I promptly left the company.

Was the kid a Klingon?

I'm slowly turning my extended family into a bunch of knife nuts. My brother was carrying a Leek that I gave him a few years ago, my cousin in law made me jealous with his new Spyderco Southard. My uncle was carrying a HK/Benchmade OTF. I had several cousins ask what knife I was carrying and if they could check it out, and then start talking about how they need to start carrying a pocket knife, especially after seeing me use my Vic Rambler all night to open beers, or to put the screwdriver to work on some of the kids toys.

If/when I inquire about a pocket clip showing the guy usually whips out an M Tech or Ebay special. I have sparked interest in a few customers on my mail route. One guy left a note on his box for me to ring the bell. He wanted to show me his new knife! Another customer signed for her package and said, "Do you got a minute?" She wanted to know if she bought a 'good' knife for her husband. She listened to us talk one day and bought him a LionSteel SR2. Hell of a first 'real' knife.

I spent Christmas evening with my GF's daughter and her family. Two of the stepsons are in their 20's, and we ended up passing around our EDC knives and admitting we felt naked without a blade. They both loved my Spyderco Dice; one of them had a Kershaw flipper and the other a CRKT.

Christmas and Thanksgiving days are good days to chat knifes. I usually bring a couple with me if I am not at home.

I have a nephew that is somewhat interested in knives but at Thanksgiving I discovered that he is a flashlight fan so at Christmas we sat around and played with a bag of old flashlights that I brought for show and tell.
