How is it knives get out of the factory without being finished?
I have a 550 that never got the slabs on it and a 650 that never got the rubber grips nor was it sharpened.

i once got a vantage with no pocket clip.....but dealer took care of it. easy fix. only thing i ever ran into with buck.....but could have been retailer got a return where a customer took it off and returned it in the box without the pocket clip...unknown to the dealer and shipped it out to me.

production moving a bit too fast? ya got them recently...new production stuff? mistakes happen. i expect buck will take care of ya or dealer/retailer will.

Not recent and I got them second hand. The 550 is 1992 and the 650 is 96. No boxes either.

Most unfinished knives (or parts) were owned by employees who ended up with them during the manufacturing or design process and later on would get rid of them for one reason or another. I have several misc parts and all came from ex-employees.

Probably got out of the factory in someone's lunch bucket. Another possibility could be dumpster diving. Perhaps when encountering certain production flaws it was Buck's policy at the time to just toss the item in the trash.

Some one on the facebook page showed a spitfire with no edge. Said it was bought at a store.
Buck offered to fix. He declined. As I probably would being a collector. It's a rarity even if it is a mistake.

Ya I imagine it could get through the line with out an edge, but not without parts.

I don't know if Buck would do a 100% Quality Audit on all of its knives that leave the factory. Cost would be very high. Most companies use a percentage of the total\estimated volume.

Most likely 'lunchbox' knives. or dumpster diving was common when we were in San Diego. Now all scrap product gets notches ground into them. I am amazed sometimes at what shows up at the warranty window for repair in similar condition.
We will not honor the warranty or do any work to those. If they show up, we keep them and give you 50% off any website knives excluding web specials, custom shop, L.E's

Does a rough hollow grind count as unfinished?

It’s hard to tell from the photo, but the BSA Vantage’s blade doubles as a nail file! I called buck when I got this and asked if this thing could’ve missed a step. They said it was possible and that they were more than happy to buff it down if I sent it to them.:D

I have several unsharpened knives in my collection. I always had the notion that trade show display knives were unsharpened. Is that true? If so, some may have found their way into circulation.

The small version in my pocket is a 2014 and in the right light angle the vertical grinding marks could almost look like your photo. Buck is pad printed on the ground part of the blade. 300

The unfinished in this thread means that it did not get fully sanded and polished to final shape, no edge, The hollow grind on yours is left raw on purpose.

Have a look at post #12 in this thread:thumbsup: Preston

Mine isn’t a blemish or a lunchboxer. Mr Hubbard stated that the hollow grind was left raw on purpose. I’m just curious as to why it would be left so rough. I was actually hoping it was “unfinished”. That would be pretty cool to have. That’s why I never sent it in to buck, after they told me they’d buff it smooth for me if I wanted.

Off topic-it took me a minute to realize your name is preston too. I saw preston in your post and was like “how does he know my name????”
