Hey there! Made this carbon blank for a knife project, what do you think? Is it as original as I think it is? Or do you know others who make this style of carbon? Would you use something like this for your knife?

Thanks , Eugene

It kinda resembles marbled carbon fiber, which is very popular right now. Maybe more of a "brushstroke", though. I, too, would like to see what it looks like when shaped.

Hey everyone! Thanks for the input. My knife scales will be pretty flat, so i will carve some separate cabochons to exeriment with the effect of the z axis on the pattern. TobinSmith: is "brushstroke" a type of carbon? I cant seem to find anything like that online. But it is funny that you mention that, cause my brother said that the pattern looks like Van Gogh's "starry night". This style different than "marble", because I use long fibers to create a swirling effect, while marble uses short fibers to create a more granulated look. And javajaws: no dust, just long carbon strands and clear epoxy.

The flat slab looks cool but that's like asking if a slab of clay looks like a nice bowl. I'd love to see it shaped and put on a knife. What was your method to making it?

ChristoDart: I will be putting this on a knife soon. This is made using 6k intermediate modulus carbon strands, manually "manipulated" to control the pattern, in a matrix of 7050 epoxy. Vaccuum bagged in a heated mold. I`m still working out some porosity issues, despite the evacuation. But overall I`m pretty happy with it.

Personally I would like see the scales on a finished knife before making a comment be it positive or otherwise.

Seems like it looks cool, but the picture is too small for me to see. I refuse to click on small images to view them anymore because the hosting sites always pretty much bog down my computer with tons of ads, long-running scripts etc. and it's a pain to download the larger version that some hosts make you do in order to view. Would you mind posting the larger version if possible? Thanks :)

NVM, I bit the bullet and downloaded it, was just too dang curious to see it. ;) Looks pretty sweet btw. I also very much agree with the "brush stroke" and "starry night" look descriptions.

A great way to show what the other guys are asking for, or to show it "shaped" is to just use a sacrificial piece and leave half of it as is (flat), then shape the other half of it so it's rounded over or contoured enough to see 'inside' the pattern, which IMHO is a great way to show the character of the material. Check out how USAknifemaker does it here on their example of their "Carbon Fiber 4 way Pattern".

Ummm... yeah sorry for the less than adequate pic size, I thought that maybe it was my phone displaying it weird, but I must of mucked something up. Will post better pics.

Dang, they're still small. Let me know if you know how to fix that. Anyhow, I marked off what I need for my knife and the rest I carved up with various compound curves. The result is pretty mundane; since there is no distinct layers and the fibers are randomized in all three planes, there is no special effect as you go deeper. The fibers just smoothly transition and the pattern continues uninterrupted. Maybe a good thing, maybe bad. Depends on what youre looking for I guess. Next I will make scales and put them on a knife.

hlcourt: I would be up for giving away some, once I came up with a worthy material. It would be fun to contribute to other people's projects and see what they make of it.

Hicourt and Eugene,
You fellows should know the rules about selling and sales talk. Selling and discussion of selling is a privilege of a Knifemaker membership.

Also, thumbnail photos which have to be opened and downloaded will likely not be viewed by most people for security reasons. It will show and enlarge if you properly link it as in the "How do I post a Photo" instructions.

I will leave this thread open, but no more sales talk. Please edit out the existing sales content.

My apologies, this was my first time posting on the forums and I haven't visited much over the past year, I was Honestly unaware, but thank you and I'll know from now on.
