United Cutlery

I won't speak to them now, but some United stuff can be fine, even excellent if you know who the contractor was. The Lainhart line and a few others were Camillus handled, Fox of Italy also contracted for them, Eickhorn handled some of the early Colt stuff, also Sakai a time or two. You have to look at the knives sometimes.

Frost, United, etc..... have all put out decent knives in the past, but it's a case of once a brandname gets spoiled, it usually stays spoiled.

Nothing wrong with United or Frost or an increasingly larger percentage of the knives coming out of China. They are properly heat treated as far as I can tell and sturdily put together. Plenty of tests by members of this forum and other forums as well as informal reviews by many users confirm that 420 can take a lickin and keep on tickin. As titt points out United has a long history of marketing knives from around the world. Very little gives me more pleasure than picking up a cheap knife once in a while to satisfy my decidedly unhealthy addiction to knives. I find my primary use for knives, outside of the kitchen and to open packaging, is to fondle them after dinner while I am viewing primetime tv. I've watched my own kid beat the hell out of 420, stuff I won't do with my expensive knives because I can't afford to. If you find a cheap knife that makes you happy - congratulations to you, or not - whether or not you're satisfied with any single purchase - it will just be a reason to buy more.
