Before I knew much about HI the first KUK to catch my eye was a Cold Steel Gurkha. My wife bought me one for Christmas. Xcellent cranial adjustment tool as far as I can tell; I still want a HI; want to find your best all around most durable no nonsense kick butt model; and Ill probably buy that one in a month or two. Im aware it wont be cheap; probably cheaper than the CS model. What is the sharpening tool everybody talks about?? Where can a guy get "newbie" info on these snakes in the grass; without the alternate language lessons (no offense to anyone) just need real green stuff. And lastly; have U guyz tested the CS Gurkha against a HK Product; WHO is the American Bando Assn... the list goes on... thanks

Gee, lots of new guys showing up :) First, you need to take a day off and look at Howard Wallace's Khukuri FAQ and the HI site. There are links at the bottom of all of Uncle Bill's posts. Most of yur questions have been answered in these two sites, including prices and descriptions on the shopping page, comparisons and tests in the FAQ. You will have to decide for yourself which of the many, many shapes and sizes applies to what you expect a BIG knife to do.
My own answer to the CS comparison is that while CS has a fine reputation, and goes to lengths to produce a good knife, their Khuks are knives designed for production, with some of the characteristics of a Khukuri. An HI Khukuri is a hand-made piece of the blacksmith's art, made by men who follow traditions literally hundreds of years old. Welcome to the Cantina.

In no way knocking black/bladesmiths here. I apprentice 4 a man w/40 yrs experience in the field. Just wonder if any testing done. If u make 1 spoon vs. 400; the one has 2 be better;somewhwre; even if at heart.

Never thought you were knocking anything or anybody, Razor :) It is just that the question has been raised several times before, what with the popularity of CS Khukuris, and I just tossed in my 1 1/2¢ worth (no coffee yet - couldn't raise a full 2¢). You hit it on the head, though. Even when everyting else in the comparisons is ignored, the forged blades still have heart.

First of all Welcome to the Cantina Raz.:)

Second of all, all of the H.I.Khukuris will fit your description.
The model you want will be up to you and what you're gonna use it for.
If you tell us a little more about that then we can supply you with some good info.
And a "search" under the different topics you are asking about will bring up tons of info as what Walosi has guided you to do.

Im aware it wont be cheap; probably cheaper than the CS model. What is the sharpening tool everybody talks about??

If you're not in a great big hurry and you can define two to a half dozen different models you want you can latch onto an UBDOTD or the new UBGA listing for dirt cheap and nothing will be wrong with the knife except cosmetics which don't really count on a khukuri anyway if you're really gonna use it and not hang it on the wall.:)

The *sharpening* tool is called a chakma and comes along with the khukuri and the karda, a small utility knife.

Where can a guy get "newbie" info on these snakes in the grass; without the alternate language lessons (no offense to anyone) just need real green stuff.

Not sure what you mean here, but some of the terminology is gonna be necessary for you to learn in order to be able to discuss khukuris.
There really isn't that much too it.;)

And lastly; have U guyz tested the CS Gurkha against a HK Product; WHO is the American Bando Assn... the list goes on... thanks [

Somewhere in all the current posts or the H.I.Archives both there are several reviews done by different people. Generally the best ones have been done by Cliff Stamp as Cliff is very methodical in his testing.
There are also some reviews in Howard Wallace's FAQ's.
A search done in either with "review" as a subject should net you lots of info.

You will have to ask Uncle Bill about the American Bando Assoc. in
e-mail as it's a subject we don't discuss here due to the wishes of said Association.:)

Good luck in your quest for your very own khukuri.:D

Edited for "/Quote" in wrong place.

Welcome to the Cantina, Raz. Looks like some good advice has turned up. Do a little reading, take your time, and when you're ready we'll get you fixed up.

If you want to know more about the ABA email me and I'll put you in touch with the Sec. of the association.

I just happen to have a 7.5 inch khukuri -- dead center in your 6 to 9 inch spec. But I don't have any 25 inch AKs. Those are special orders. But, I do have the 20 inch AK which is plenty for most folks.

DOES SOMEBODY NEED 2 MAKE ONE?? HINT HINT GOT pics of the

Take your time. The more research you do the better chance you'll have of getting what you want first time around.

Raz the ABA doesn't like publicity so to speak. We respect their request for privacy which is as it should be.:)

A little 12" balance model works really well for me, But I'm an old short fat Big man that has pockets deep enough to hide it in. YMMV.:D
It's probably my favorite among the little khukuris and it's quite a conversation piece due to its ability to balance on its edge.
It's big enough to take small saplings down with and is as big as a Randall #1, I think it is, that our Bro Rusty keeps reminding us of when size gets outta perspective.;)

A 7.5" khukuri? That sounds kinda interesting. Is that 7.5" OAL, or blade length? What style is it and who made it? And of course...how much?;) :D

Hey Razorblade, I'm the dude swinging that 25" AK. He sure is a lot of fun, but only for the really serious (AKA crazzy:D:p) Wood chopper/splitter. Take your time and check the Khuks out. Then Snag a UBDOTD if you can:D he he he.

Razorblade,

When I first got interested it really did take me a week of reading in my spare time to get through the FAQ. It is some good reading!! :D

7.5"? what would Clifton say?

Tune in Monday, to hear the next episode of "The Cry of the Caveman", or, "Hear Tsimi Scream".

Razor, Khuks go by overall length, from buttcap to point. A 17" M43 (which Tsimi likes, as a "medium" knife) has a 13 1/2" blade. Rusty, on the other hand, judges Khuks by their thirst for blood, rather than their size, and loves his 12" Sirupati. This makes for some spirited conversations

Hey, my default choice ( as in when my brain goes tilt ) is the 16.5 or 18 inch WW2.

Like the .308(16.5") or 30-06(18"), it is the STANDARD against which everything else gets measured.
