Unusual 110 construction

Well, however they came to be, Buck listed them in the Special Projects list and describes them to a tee.

That says Nickel Silver (engraved), but there has been other information that they were pewter, and stamped, not engraved, so the mystery continues.

Oh yeah, I'm sending a message to Joe asking him for whatever information that he can come up with about this one. I'm going to lock the thread for now and will reopen it when/if he gets back to me with something.

Cool, I just got a couple of messages back from Joe about the JW110.

"Hello Dave,
The odd thing to me is that I cant find a single JW 110 in this building. We usually end up with lots of left over parts. I was hoping to find one I could take apart. I know that we made the knife so that FM could install the inlays. If I remember right, they are kind of like an overlay. Think of a model 525 Gent, both sides flat and parralel to each other. Then you glue the rest on. We were not all that happy with the way it all turned out because as was brought up in an earlier post, the fit is not up to our normal standards and we did not do that part of the assembly. I am pretty sure we did not even do the glueing, but it was done by FM.
There are a couple guys here that might have been involved in the project and I will ask them for more details."

"I got a little more info after talking to the guys. They say we did do the sub assembly and the problem with the project was that FM was providing the bolster/liner part and it did not fit well. We even had problems with the medallion not fitting in the inlay.
I believe I found the project, its a 110FM, catalog #2789. If this is correct, then we only made about 2200 of them although the serial number on the one in your picture suggest 10,000 or more. They actually came out in september of 1998 according to the computer and that is consistant with a project full of problems since the date code is for 1997.
I hope this helps.
Take care,"

More about it from Joe. Thank you very much for the input Joe!

"FM provided the bolster/liner parts, the medallion, and possibly the wood inlays. Buck tried to make it look good enough for the Buck name stamped on the blade.
One of the guys here just shook his head when I reminded him of this project. He said it was just aweful working on them."

Thanks Longbow, but it's Joe that needs thanking (which I did). It appears that he did a great job checking it out for me and bringing out the facts. The fit of the inlays on mine could be better, there's a slight gap at each end, but overall it's not that bad.

Those were three separate messages from him. Each one gave a little different scenaro and it seems that after some research (the way I read the last message) is that "FM provided the bolster/liner parts, the medallion, and possibly the wood inlays" and that Buck did the final assembly.

Yes, it was pretty obvious from horrible fit and finish shown in the pictures that either Buck didn't do the assembly or.......if Buck did the assembly they must have gotten bad parts to assemble.

Whichever way it actually turned out, it's obviously a bad memory for Buck and a final product that was not up to Buck standards.
