The Bread roll cutting test
To see if you knife is working sharp. Cut roll lengthwise as if making a sandwich.

The pickle cutting test
To see if your knife is really dull. Cut pickles in to 1/8 inch croos section slices.

The slit you own throat from ear to ear test

The cardboard cutting test: see if the edge can rip open a cardboard box with less effort than doing it with the spine.

The aluminum can opening test: if the knife fails, eat the knife ... it obviously isn't made of steel ... probably candy....

Sounds like a great test to me ?!?!
Did the pickle slice straight through or did it just cut to the opposite side of the skin and require a restroke. ALso Please be specific about the type of bread if you want this to be taken with any credability. White is much to soft for a course edge and may just shread. Italian or french bread requires a whole different edge geometry. Oh man ... lets not even get into the bagal thing ... whew thats a whole different topic of disscusion. Ummmm The blood ?? .... was the pickle still alive when you did him in

Piercing a car door. If a car door is not available pierce a sheet of computer paper; it's just as difficult a test.

If the knife fails see aluminum can test above.

Clamp a coin in a vice and cut it by hammering on the spine of the knife.

That's a more difficult test -- I actually damaged a 99 cent bait knife that way. Knives that fail the coin test are not necessarily edible.

Clamp a small area of the blade in a vice or other static device and apply lateral force. If the blade bends or breaks, it may have been made of steel.
