Hi all,

I am just starting to get into forged blades and want to fond some new guys to start tracking and get orders in with etc. I have already found russ andrews knives thanks to this website and Roger P here so I have a couple on order. So lets hear what you guys think. One particular little thing I really like is a beautiful hand rubbed finish. Please include maker's website and pictures if you got them. Also they don't necessarily have to be up and coming just not super well known would be great. I can afford spending aprox 800 on a nice bowie but can't afford 1800+ for a bowie. Also how do you guys normally find new makers? thanks

Trevor

I was just about to start a similar thread when I spotted this one. I do not want to hijack the original intent of the person who started this thread but I was going to ask for recommendations of makers who are not well known but make quality knives. There are many locally known makers, often making knives parttime and are only known around their home town or state. Some are quite good, others that say they are makers but do little more than put together knife kits. I do not want to start a bashing list but would like recommendations of quality lesser known knife makers that put out a very nice product for a reasonable price,

My first and only question is whether you are buying as an investment, or simply buying quality knives. This will decide a lot, IMHO. Search the thread on JS and MS knives, for one simple example. You will see some knives by Wheeler, DeRosiers, and a few others that may not jump in value over the next 10-20 years (or they may), but the quality goes without question.

Trevor....I'll give you a few names...and how about you do the search and find them....you have to have some of the fun!

I don't find new makers...they find me....make a gift of the knife , and I pimp for them!!!LOFL...I kill me ladies and gents...:D:D

1. Sam Butler

2. Erik Fritz

3. Jerid Johnson-he can make the hell out of a knife, but does not do fighter style guards yet, just beefy plate guards.

4. Jody Muller-he is not really an up and comer....but I do think he is a greatly kept secret, and should get more mention....check out his work

This should keep you busy for a while.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Some that i would recommend are Shawn McIntyre,Tommy Gann,Matt Roberts, and Pete Crowl. All are journeyman smiths that are turning out excellent work.

Since his name came up, anyone know what happened to Adam DesRosiers? He seems to have fallen off the map - his website vanished a while ago, and I haven't seen any new pics of his work in a long time.

I asked the same question the other day. Someone (can't remember who) said he would be sharing a table with another maker at the upcoming Blade Show.

When I say up and coming I guess I am talking about makers that haven't quite made it to the main stream. There are some makers out there that have a fair bit of experience but don't have a lot of notoriety. Also there are some newer makers that have a little experience but already are developing a distinct style and their work quality is better then one might expect from a maker of their experience. I guess I am look for value, bang for the buck. I want great knives that maybe aren't quite as expensive as they could be because the makers aren't super well known or they just need more time. I am mainly looking for these knives for using and collecting.

thanks for the help guys and again please post web addresses if you have them. I have tried to find most of them but there are a couple I can't find.

hi Trevor,

Then you are looking for two different things.

Value priced makers can be found at apprentice, Journeyman and Master Smith levels.

Up and comers are a different question:

Two makers I would put in that group are:

Pete Crowl (JS)

Phillip Patton (AS)

I will be doing an article on both of them for Knives Illustrated this year. So better get them now. :D

Adam is alive and well in Alaska. He called me recently, and said he has finished building his shop and that he will be delivering a Bowie/Fighter Set, that I have on order in the next 60 days. We shall see.

Thanks Les and Keith, for the mention. :)
Pete and I are both in northern Indiana. Could this be the Year of the Hoosier Bladesmiths? :D

The url I have for Adam' site no longer works. If someone has a current working link, do share.

Thimbs up on all of the guys mentioned. Some of them aren't exactly unknown as Les and other guys have been singing their praises in print and on line for a while. Glad to see Mr. Patton has made that list. I met him at the Ohio Classic show and his stuff looks even better in person.......and he's only like what? 16? so think of how good he will get...lol;):D
