Up and Coming bladesmiths?

I just turned 26 last month, but people think I look 16...
BTW, your's look better in person too, but that wouldn't be hard, since your pictures are so awful. :D
Hey....I just told some folks on the wilderness forum that bad pics are just as effective at hiding minor cosmetic flaws as ones taken by a professional:D But you and many others on here are correct. i do need to figure out how to use a freakin' digital camera:grumpy:

Do you have a digital camera? Webcams don't count.;)

Buy two from Phillip Patton! One for using and one for collecting. Do it now before he realizes how good he is!

Phillip, don't read that!

Are you trying to say mine are collectible?! Shoot, I should raise my prices... :)
So, why do you only have one? ;):D

3. Jerid Johnson-he can make the hell out of a knife, but does not do fighter style guards yet, just beefy plate guards.

Wow.. Thanks Steven.. I am honored to make your list.. As for my guards.. I agree.. A few honest buddies have said I needed to spice them up a bit but they were :jerkit:'offs and I ignoed them.. LOL.. So, hi my name is Jerid Johnson and I make boring guards.. I realize I have a problem and am committed to overcome this challenge  The next knife I make (aside from specific orders) will have a guard that meets or exceeds your expectations :D.. Sheesh.. hahaha

I received the same advice/scolding about guards and another about ugly wood that looks like it belongs in a poster for a sci-fi movie....:D

I have noticed that alot of the really good "up and coming smiths" do American style knives, bowies and such.. do you think that there is a link between the knives they make and th notoriety they receive? also, do you think it is better to make user knives or collector knives?

i really like making japanese style stuff, however, i dont want that to hurt me in the long run, you know? i am hoping to test for journeyman after my two years are up, but every test knife i have ever seen has been some variation of a bowie.. am i at a disadvantage in that i dont make bowies (yet)?

thanks so much
~Chris

Japanese stuff is AWESOME...and sells....but so do bowies and fighters...if you want to do both, and can....it will only help you in the long run.

Some of those that make and sell fine bowies become one-trick ponies, because the wind up NOT being able to design and make other stuff that sells.

Does this make sense?

Do they become one trick ponies because the can't design other stuff that sells or because they choose not to? You uber-collectors in here do tend to send us new guys in that bowie or japanese direction sometimes ...lol. I guess it is going to depend on who you are selling to. After a while, perhaps some makers feel that they can't afford to make certain types of knives that they used to. If you are going to get $750-800 for a nice carbon bowie or $375-400 for an equally nice hunter, and the bowie doesn't cost twice as much to make in time and materials, it is kind of a no brainer if both sell equally well. I am having that issue with the mammoth ivory that I bought from Don Hanson. Im not sure that I can charge an extra $100 for a small carbon steel knife and expect it to sell even with the fancy handle material. I may do one as a "loss leader/halo" piece for a show, but as for the other scales, I may have to wait until I learn how to make damascus.
