Up or Down

Mornin' folks.

When polishing a blade with a ScotchBrite belt(or similar brand), is the edge up or down? I use a sled jig if that makes a difference?

Just purchased my first.... never used them before, never done a belt polish.

You don't want the edge of any knife going into a soft and grabby material. DOWN. ( same rule for buffing!)

I admit to using them edge up but they do scare me a bit sometimes.

On un-sharpened blades? I just want to do a final finish pre-sharpening and not wash out my grind lines. I'd still like to use my jig which is set up for edge-up grinding angles.

I've caught the blade tip on a nonwoven belt before. Threw the blade down and it rebounded into my hand, cutting me a little.

I'm looking at one of my fingers that got reattached after a grinder caught a sharp piece of metal...be safe. Edge down works.
