Upcoming deployment

I would suggest a medium sized fixed blade instead of a folder, and a Leatherman.

There are a lot of good recommendations already posted, so I won't add anything else, except to say good luck and best wishes for a safe return.

Thanks for the input guys! My leatherman wave will definately go as well as at least one folder. Take care guys and I will see you when I get home!

CJ,

I would concur with those who suggest a cheaper but reliable folder. I am heading back later this year and have my eyes on another Cold Steel Voyager (clip point with plain edge) as well as one or two of my fixed blades.
I have to say that the last time I was there, my 3" Voyager saw the majority of all cutting tasks.
Good luck over there.

The suggestions here are great. Be sure to take a multitool.
Just want to thank you for what you are doing for your country and others.
Keep your wits about you and come home.

How about a 3" mini Buck/Strider spear point? Pretty much indestructible.

So I'll be the first, how about the Sere 2000?

I think I'd pick the Spyderco Paramilitary because it's a little lighter but just as capable.

If there is high probability of having it confiscated by a SOB, then I'd suggest a cheaper knife.

I'd be very pissed if someone confiscated my knife!

I think I'd take a cheaper fixed blade that had a good sheath system that let me carry it where ever I found most suitable. Even a light weight SWAK strapped to your vest or under it could serve the purpose. It's very light, strong enough and so cheap no one would bother confiscating it for their own uses. I'd probably have 2 SWAK's hidden away!

Be safe,
Collecter

Lots of good knife suggestions. There is also a lot of chatter about Leathermans. Take the advise of a poor sales monkey: Get a Swisstool instead of a Leatherman. Their tools are on the outside when closed and can be accessed quickly. They use very sturdy locks (unlike the Wave, whose tools will fold in easily.) Swisstool is the way to go.
Vaya con Dios, man.

I think if you take any of the knives suggested you won't get wrong with. But are you not concerned how heavy it might be to carry a large and heavy knife? I was not in Iraq, but I worked in Middle East and I remember it is too hot there that you want to carry as little weight as possible. Plus, there are no large trees, except oasises, and a lot of open areas, so chopping is quite limited. When I was in desert, the wind was always blowing that within 5 minutes my equipment was full of sand. There are areas with compacted sand in desert, but mainly sand is not compacted and I saw rocky areas only near sea and mountains. Probably an ordinary shovel will work well as entrenching tool.
Regards,

 Wow!! I received more responses than I had anticipated. I picked up a buck 110 today @ the BX. I think I will take that and probably a 880sp. I will have to order that one though. I just hope the wife will agree. I had considered an emerson, but not many people seem to give high marks to them. I have a cqc7b and have never had a problem with that one, although my mach 1 lock seems to slip ever so slightly just like my sere 2000. I like the way the commander handles as well. Decisions, decisions, decisions. The people here are wonderful, and that makes the job of having to go over there that much easier.

The Buck 110 is a good choice. It's the best "bang for your buck", in a locking folder on the planet!

We like hearing about the knives you guys carry so keep in touch!

Good luck,

Challenger

You may order 110 with different steel ATS-34, BG-42, Damascus
I have 110 with BG-42:
