Update: Benchmade service

I have nine Benchmade folders that I've acquired over the years since I bought a Mini AFCK. With one exception, each one was as close to perfect as you could reasonably wish and more than met my expectations for their price point. The one exception was a knife that had a blade with a poor finish. The grind was good, the blade centered perfectly, the blade opened smoothly, and locked into place with no discernible play, but the finish was UGLY! I sent it back to Benchmade who replaced the blade and made sure everything else was right. They were sorry that the poorly finished blade left their shop and were making inquires about how it happened to make sure it didn't happen again. No manufacturer is perfect, but I think all you can reasonably ask is that they stand behind their product and make it right when there's a problem. Benchmade did that for me.

They don't refine an edge as much as I would like, but that isn't a problem because I can take care of that myself and don't mind doing so.

This is off topic but do any of you know how long it takes to get a replacement pocket clip in the mail? It is going on 3 weeks and I understand it has to be processed I'd just like to know when it might be wise to request one again if this request was overlooked

I'm hoping for the best on my recently sent in 556, its been about 7 days from the time they received it and nothing back home yet, I hope the edge at least stays the same and not get worse as it was sent to replace the omega springs :/

edit: speak of the devil, right after i posted this comment...I got an email saying it's being sent back lol.

Well said Mike. I grew up with Buck 110 and 112's. They were my introduction to the knife world. At 14 or 15 they were the best knives anywhere. Still sell like hotcakes on the various Forums.

Thanks. Absolutely. The 110 and 112 are both great knives, and even today offer a great value for the money.

Ya know, every time I unbox a new Benchmade, I think 'this may be the one'! Lol.
I very rarely buy collectables and look for fit over finish. A perfectly functioning, durable knife that I know will last for many years is so much more pleasing to me than a pretty one. Seriously, all this talk of uneven edges makes my head spin.

I do have a few safe queens and others that don't see much actual use, but most of my knives were bought as users and of all the things I look at and expect from a knife, a factory edge just doesn't rate that high.

A few years ago I invested $60 in a diamond sharpening system and another $10 on a few thick, sturdy pieces of leather and a chunk of green stropping compound. Nowadays I'll use a new knife until it dulls, put my own edge on it, and maintain it for months with just a quick touch up and strop. It might be a year before I actually re-sharpen it.

As far as broken springs go I think they're like unicorns, I hear stories but have never seen one in person, and I have never had a dull edge out of the box.

I have sent 4 knives to Benchmade for refurbishment not warranty and it was insisted that I not pay for service or return shipping, and they all came back as close to new as possible.

I use to be the same way. I would use a factory edge until it wasn't performing up to its potential, then touch it up... These days I find myself working on edges even though they don't really need it, but I enjoy it, and it is therapeutic :D

Hard telling if you emailed the request. The last time I ordered some, I called and they arrived in a little over a week...

Possible. Took them less time to get some clips to me in Switzerland.

I always call for requests for service or pocket clips. Someone always answers....I think her name is Whitley??.....I never waited more than a week for a clip to arrive.
Service can be an issue sometimes with all manufacturers. Sent a Pac Salt in to Spydie and the fixed my issue.....but literally flattened the entire edge.

I had an excellent experience with Benchmade's service last month. My 707S had some pretty banged-up serrations and a little bit of blade play, so I dropped it off at the factory on a Thursday for service and replacement of the partially-serrated blade with a plain edge. They had it ready for pickup the next day, and according to the work order they replaced every part of it except the scales-- liners, axis lock, omega springs, washers, blade, screws, clip. $30 and it's essentially a new knife.

When I visited the factory last week, I got a chance to look at the "Lifesharp" area..
As I was standing there watching two of the guys sharpen knives, it became apparent they were paying more attention to chatting with each other, than they were with the knives they were sharpening...

The first thing I thought of was, perhaps this is part of the cause of bad edges when knives are sent back in.

This would be good feedback to send to BM. This would explain a lot of bad edge grinds.

this is very concerning as i barely used my BM grip for a week and sent it for sharpening.

seems like i will get back a reduced blade height if this is true

sharpening such hard steels is very difficult unlike cheap kitchen knives and i kept on messing the angle.
