Here she is! Partial strip and patina, thumb ramp gone, 90deg spine where it was...
I love the high grind and the entire thing has a great feel. Very light TBH. has a decent edge but I'll getter better.

I'm curious if there's a small dimple at the end of the ramp or if this was intended for steel. It doesn't have a sharp edge in that spot...

Too bad there's no brass plugs. I was looking forward to playing with that right off. I'm sure I can find some, if not, no biggie. I'm already sanding around the handle to remove the coating. I'll get it all except for under the scales. I'm going to try a few mods that I haven't done before. Such as convex edge, pattern patina and mYcarta scales.
Plans for mods are:
Full visible strip
New pattern patina
Liners
Jimping
Sharpen fire steel notch, possibly deepen grove.
The scales will come last as I have zero experience making micarta. I picked up some really cool burlap ribbon on clearance at Walmart that has a neato bright orange print on it.

I'll prob end up losing the etching but, oh well.
Let the mods begin!!

nice.

is that a dent in the spine? or just the light?

That dimple is normal and lies at the front of the thumb ramp. It's just not that obvious on the original.

My guess is that it's meant for a fire steel.

Congrats on your "new to you" 12!! She's a purty gal, so I know you're a proud pappa.

Nice mate, ya lucky bastard..

Was it a pre loved blade? Or you bought it new and modded? Just curious as to why no weights..

Thanks everyone!
Abrasion- I'll poke around when I go to get stainless hardware, if nothing pops up ill take you up on that. Thank you!

It's storming outside and I can't keep my hands off her so I got the stripping done. Just scraped with a razor and sanded it off by hand. Not too tough since the big parts already done...

Took off the patina and a bunch of surface scratches that went the wrong way(spine to edge).
As I predicted, the etching is all but gone except in just the right light, s'all good.

She cleaned up nice! Next up is liners or patina, whichever I settle on first. Trying to decide on material/ color for liners. My big Beckers each have their own color so yellow(4) orange(9) green(tweeners) rust(5&15) are out. Went to a thrift store today and found nothing.
I saw a 9 somewhere around here that had a mango patina that was done in 2 or 3 stages and came out really sweet with the layers. It made a very nice depth look. I'm looking for something similar that adds depth and several different patterns. I'm going to do some digging and come up with something.
She cleans up real nice!

Thanks for the info on the groove Travis! I suspected as much from the way it looks and feels. I'm thinking I'll shape it a bit more so its positively a rod groove.

Thank goodness I've cooled off on the preorder. I'll go ahead and pay the mortgage this week :D
Of course ya know, I'll keep posting and cramming pics as it rolls along.
Appreciate your compliments, comments, and suggestions.

Haha, yeah I did get lucky. $80 shipped. I'm always too late on stuff like that.
It was pre loved. This is the sellers pic. Great fella. Sold it to buy more knives, like the rest of us nuts...

Nice grab!
The 12 is a sweet blade.
Looks good stripped.
That's funny...I never noticed the groove before. Cool!

NC - Don't worry about the brass weights. You won't need them after you make your micarta. I tried them out when I got my 12 but didn't find them very useful.

Thanks rkmoore! This worked out great!
Yeah, I just watched a video with Ethan and Doug. They're talking about the balance and you can personalize it etc...then E says "When you get the knife, the first thing you do is open the scales, remove the plugs and toss them, then it's perfect" hahah! So, yeah, I'll take that! You're right too, I'm not gonna try to drill out for them and if E says its right and that's how it should feel, done deal, I'll be wasting my time just to leave them out anyway.

Thanks Jonny!

Looks real good now, and yeah I wouldn't worry about the weights, I've been reading and most people seem to take them out to either lighten the blade or put different handles on.

80 bucks is a bargain for what you got, well done 👍🏻

Onya Slice. Nice score mate. It's got me frothing for mine. Whenever it gets here. I like the mods too. Pretty much what I want to do to mine. Whenever it gets here. I do have to ask though, I noticed the same thing Bladite did. Is that a ding on the spine? It's only subtle, the second shot shows it the best. I hope for your sake it isn't and that is just an optical illuuuuusion.

Good luck with the mYcarta bud, I'm sure you'll do just fine. Plenty of info in here to go by I'm assuming. Can't wait to see your efforts.

Anyway, chop something with it for me. Seriously can't wait to get mine. Whenever it gets here..

(There should be like, some sort of vacuum tube from AmericaWorld to my house so I could get things as quickly as you lot do, that would be choice)

Hey, it's a beaut! Thanks for the pictures. Keep us updated as it evolves while we wait for the preorders to become actual knives.

If your referring to what I saw, it looks like a byproduct of the de-ramping.
