Hi all,
Last weekend I was at Cabela's getting some camping stuff. When ever we go there I always check out the Guns and Knives. I was looking at a Manix 2 and I took out my PM2 to compare side by side. One of the clerks sees my PM2 and mentions that they just got a bunch of them in but they were not on display yet. He asked if he could see mine and was impressed with how smooth it was. He said the ones they had were very tight and couldn't be flicked open. He then brings the fact that I have a PM2 to the attention of the head knife guy who also wants a look. I have talked with this head guy before and he knows his stuff fairly well. So he goes and grabs one of the PM2s they have to show me how bad the opening was. When I got it in hand I could tell immediately that it wasn't right. It failed on the classic PM2 knock off tell tail signs. The jimping was not angled, The curved part of G10 that allows access to the compression lock disengagement was not smoothly rounded but rather sharp. The G10 felt off. The Spyderco CPM S30v stamp was touching the plunge line (I think that is what it is called, the line where the grinding starts). The pocket clip seemed blocky. The knife was not even close to smooth. I told the guy all this stuff and he wrote it down and said he would check into this. I also told him to inquire where these came from as this is a huge clue to authenticity. He then asked me who is making the knock offs and I said China. Then came a clincher, the only reason the knives were not on display and ready for sale was because none of the boxes were labeled with UPC or anything.
Based on what I know and my own research on confirming the authenticity of my own PM2, I would not buy a PM2 like the one they had at Cabela's. So what do you guys think? Is this possible for a big chain store to get a big shipment of knock offs? I may be able to get back to Cabela's this weekend as I will be in the area for more camping. I will be curious to see what if anything came of this.
Oh, and just because I like pictures in threads, here is my real deal PM2!
