I didn’t want to say anything on the forums about this because it seems as if I’m always whining about something but yesterday and Monday were very stressful for me. Actually so stressful that I was starting to breath funny again yesterday evening, went to sleep on the computer earlier than usual and have slept the biggest part of today as well.
I had an appointment at the St John Medical Center last Thursday for the same CT scan I had on my heart a year ago but the tech said that particular test wouldn’t show clear enough images this time, probably because of all the weight I’ve gained back from lack of exercise.
Anyway they scheduled me for a different test last Monday at 8:00 a.m. which was a Persantine Thallium test or so I understood and you have to go in fasting and caffeine free with only water to drink after midnight....
Well somehow after the Persantine I was given something else instead of the Thallium and evidently the images weren’t clear enough to show anything so the hospital called Tuesday wanting to know if I could come in yesterday for another one.
The test wouldn’t be anything for an average person without a bad back but for people in my shape it is a Killer!!!!
You’re put on a little narrow hard table with maybe a one inch foam cushion on it and you have to lay almost perfectly still and flat on your back for 15 to 18 minutes with your arms over your head until the camera is through taking pictures, I’m assuming it’s some sort of an X-ray camera or similar.
Then you’re given a break where you can get something to eat and drink; coffee of course and after an hour so they take you back in for another injection of something and more pics where you’re put back on the skinny hard torture table for another 15-18 minutes.
Well Monday was bad enough but yesterday was the killer that about did me in with the added stress from the severe pain....
Yesterday the test was done a bit differently as they stressed my heart first and it was done Bam, Bam, Bam! They used my IV to inject the Persantine which took about 4 minutes, a huge tube with several inches of the medicine in it! I was in right at 8:00 a.m. and they let me go at 9:30 a.m. with orders to be back at 1:00 p.m. for the balance of the testing. That’s when the injected the Thallium into my IV or at least that’s what I think it was, then after the last set of pics was taken they injected me with something to clear it out, anyway I’m fairly sure that’s the order things were done in. The whole day was so stressful it’s hard to keep things straight....
Also instead of the 15-18 minutes with my arms over my head it was 18-20 minutes both times!!!! My pain level jumped to an 8, 8-1/2 and I was damned near in tears both times when I was allowed to get off my back.
I knew it hurt and it hurt damned bad but I didn’t realize that it had put my body under that much stress again....
I called my pain management doctor’s office for an appointment to come in Monday for another pump increase.
I’m sure it won’t be as much as the last one but I don’t feel that one that big would cause any side affects either. I’ll just be glad when this is all over with and I can get the surgery and hopefully this surgery will finally fix the problem once and for all!

Continued prayers and good wishes from WV my friend.

Hi Yvsa,

Sounds like you might have a Good Pain Doc if He/She is willing to work with cranking the pump up when needed.
I had a MS pump implanted back in 2004, and after about 60 days, my bod rejected it, and while I was in the hosp having the pump ex-planted my Wife was hit so hard in a car accident that She has had to have Her C-spine fused, then revised and now She is a Chronic Intractable Pain pt as well as myself... so We can really sort of understand some of Your agony... Hang in there.. hope that once the surgery is done for You that things will settle down a bit..
Sending All the Best to You ,
Ed and Sandra
