Some of you may know I'm working on my own knives so here's a little update.

Spring break is here and I finally have some time to really grind (and not worry about school), everything before this was mainly prep work with hacksaws and files. Mostly everything has been done with my 1x42 and this is only my 2nd time making knives, so those of you trying to get into knife making don't be discouraged!

Anyway onto to the pictures.

Here are my main two pieces. The top one is a pikal, meant to be held with the tip down/edge towards you. And the bottom one is my utility knife. Originally it did not have a protruding finger guard, but the steel I ordered was too wide so I took it down some and decided to keep the guard, next ones I'm working on will not have it.

Here are some pictures of what my next batch might look like. I also messed up on the first hole I drilled and still figuring out where to place the next set.

The small one on the bottom was my first attempt at using my grinder and I didn't want to waste steel, so I picked something small with simple lines. After I designed the other 3 knives and cut them out, I had a small section left and thought I'd try something a little different and came up with the top one. I like it a lot, but the handles are just to small so I'm going to make a larger version when I order new steel (just a prototype  ).

After I started profiling the necker, I realized I would have had a more usable edge if I went with a wharncliffe edge. Next time.

Next step is to grind some more, heat treat, and put on the handles. Criticism welcome!

At one point I did use Ban's 2x72 Grizzly to hog off some steel and shape the handles on my first knife. The wheel was rubber over aluminum and it absorbed some of the vibration making it easier to work with. My delta 1x42 has a hard plastic wheel and I'm thinking up upgrading/adding the wheel with rubber. Anyone know where to find custom wheels or custom rubber fittings?

well they look great, I really like the drop point and the reverse tanto.

off topic, that ruck is pretty clean. are you military, outdoorsman or an *cough* airsofter *cough* ?

Thanks! No, no, and no, hahah. I got the bag fairly recently and haven't been outdoors with it yet, but I will soon.

I use to paintball back in high school at this local place and two guys one day showed up with airsoft guns and we were wondering what they were? I think airsoft is more popular then paintball now. I'd like to play it, but not enough time and don't have the extra cash.

Nice looking knives! Particularly the reverse blade; that looks like something that would be fun to play with. Can't wait to see them finished. I like the bag too. :)

Is MRpink a reference to Reservoir Dogs? Just curious.

Thanks! Spring break is ending tomorrow, I probably won't have time to work on anything for a couple weeks, but I'll keep this thread updated.

Haha, yes my name comes from Reservoir Dogs.

*Small update*

Yesterday I had a couple hours to grind so I started working on my general utility knife. The plunge line and convex grind came out good and I had a real hard time with the tip but it worked out in the end. This is my best job I've done so far and I can see the improvement from my last couple grinds. It's a lot of fun and I'm learning a lot.

I have to share the camera so this is the best quality picture I could get out of my webcam.

ok, 3 months later and I finally get to my knives. I decided to start with my pikal. I had a trouble doing the handles, but next time around should be much smoother. The handles are still a bit blocky so I need to thin and round them off.

thanks! that was my 4th (and latest) plunge line, so I learned and improved from the first 3.

here's the general utility knife I'm almost done with. I still need to smooth the pins, polish the spine, hand sand the micarta, and put the finishing touches on the edge.

MRPink! Nice to see fellow dogs from the yard on here. Once again love the blades, as on mentioned on Dan's forum. What grinder you use. I am going to get a coote I think.

Hey, it's always good to see other dogs outside the yard! The grinder I use is the Delta SA180, 1x42". Not the ideal machine for knife making, but combined with a hacksaw and files, it gets the job done. In the 2x72" configuration, I only have experience with the KMG and Grizzly, but the Coote seems similar to the Grizzly, except the Grizzly has a buffer attached. If I can do it on my little Delta, any 2x72" would work.

Updated pictures from today with smoothed pins, polished spine, and final edge.

Nice work, and some good solid desisns. With what looks like a full convex they should realy cut.

thanks for the compliments everyone!

I wasn't happy with the pikal's handles so I contoured it some more today. It's much rounder and fits the hand better now.

I might do the same rounding on my general utility knife, but haven't made a decision yet.
