We're still working on them. Latest from our hosting company is that the firewall updates have helped a bit, but we're getting slammed from China, Ukraine, Malaysia and other sources.

If it continues on I may have to block many of these countries, so I apologize in advance to our users from those areas.

I'm having a lot of trouble posting anything with any size to it, I guess because the site is under attack. I haven't be able to update a WIP I started in ST in about 12 hours. sigh...

I wonder why they're attacking BF?

F5 networks............ curious to know if the hosting site is using this technology

There are attacks coming from all directions these days in their effort to bring down cyber attacks on entire countries and networks, call it cyber war and BF is a big target in the electronic wars going on. If they can start bringing down large websites they could in theory shut down things like water treatment plants, military installations, nukes and even facebook.

Bufford is correct these are called DDOS attacks (distributed denial of service) by over loading the ingress connection of the public facing DNS (domain name servers). Very easy to do with a few kids and laptops. Also easy to defend if you have the correct equipment. This is a very easy method to disrupt business. If you consider someone like Amazon or Dell who relies so much on internet sales who if their site is down they loses millions, it is an effective method of cyber crime. You can trace it back to the root source, however, it takes time and $ to do so and if you are smart enough to pull it off then they won't find you easily. Even if they do find you, what can they do, especially if you are from another country.

These days, it generally takes a lot more than just a few computers. Large ddos attacks, like BF seems to be experiencing, often use a botnet with thousand, even millions, of computers in it. The largest I've heard of was managed (I guess) by a now incarcerated Russian spammer and numbered around 30 million computers. Not so easy to defend against when the numbers get that large, at least not without blocking entire regions/countries, and innocent users in the process, like Spark mentioned in his first post.

What I don't get about these attacks is why...

Is there a rival knife forum that's hosted in another country that is trying to eliminate us? lol

That does happen. Unfortunately, it is possible for anyone to hire a botnet's controller in the internet's darker waters. However, I would guess that Bladeforum's competitors have neither the desire nor the funds to do so. Especially not for this extended amount of time.

Thanks for the update, and the hard work that you've been doing.

I say block them if you need to.
Been having problems with replies this morning. Getting Database error, and internet explorer can't find website when I hit reply tab after quoting someone.

Thanks for the heads up Spark. I still can't get on with my DSL. The only way for me is the cell service. I'm not sure how that works. But its at least allowing me to post with my cell phone, for now.

Where's Jack Bauer and Chloe when you need them?

Thank you for the update ,I think it would suck to block Malaysia we have a great forumite from there.
