hey guys, quick question. a while back i thought i read that the full size military was going to be updated with a new lock. is this still the case? any other updates planned? thanks!

I think in the future they may put a compression lock on it, but last I heard that is a few years away. There is also a sprint run of carbon fiber ones with BG 42 steel that are going to ship soon.

I haven't really heard much about it but I'd really like to see the Ball Bearing lock put on the Military.

Carbon fiber, compression lock, BG-42. Yikes, my wallet is shaking in fear.

Any clue whenit may be available?

Thanks, Vassili.

In a few weeks. You may see last posts by TazKristi at the Spyderco home forum.
Vassili, it may be interested to you - BG-42 hardness is HRC 61 (Sal). It is a terrific knife but the price is huge, MSRP is about $280. Is the carbon fiber really so better then G-10?

Even though, as a lefty, the ball lock would be better for me than the current liner lock, I'm not so sure how well suited it is for the Military. Perhaps it is just a coincidence, but the knives that use the ball lock seem to be heavier than front locks, and considerably heavier than liner locks, of comparable size and material. I think one of the major attractions of the Military has been its lightness, or more accurately its "power to weight ratio". With a ball lock, the differences between it and the Manix would blur.

For the record, the upcoming sprint run of peely ply CF / BG-42 Militarys use the normal liner lock. On the other hand, the good news is that, according to TazKristi a day or so ago, they should begin shipping within two weeks.

The Mili is due for an update, although I must say that we've been refining the model continually. Small things like the change in the "jimping" behind the hole, which is being changed again. Adding "jimping" to the finger choil. Material changes in the blade and liners.

The next major change will be to create a Mili 2 with a new lock, but it is a ways off. We'll need to "choose" the lock (Compression, Ballbearing w/wings, the new "Stop-lock" which is showing promise in R&D).

I think I'd like to do a run of lefties, just for the likes of Deacon :p in the meanwhile.

As long as the subject has been opened, are there any particular changes you would like to see on the Military?

BTW, these suggestions will also be considered for the Para.

Thanks for the info, Sal. I would really like the compression lock, other than that I can't really see much more that could be improved. Normally I like handles with a bit more of a positive blade guard, but it really feels good in the hand, and the thumb ramp helps to protect against having your hand slide up the blade anyway, so that isn't a huge issue to me either.

I'll admit, I wasn't prepared to like the Mili in CF as much as I did ... it feels better than any canvas micarta or G10 I've ever handled and seems quite a bit lighter than my other EDC's (Manix and BM 710). The handle including the liner lock is impressive and tough as nails even without liners. I've always liked the S30V but the grind on this knife, which I also liked on the Manix, is full flat ground with a nice high edge grind that hasn't needed to be reprofiled to get and stay spooky sharp. I liked it so much I bought a second! Only one change I'd make is to put some sort of grip groove on the scales to enhance grip on slippery (not just wet) materials (like blood). Minor issue but thanks for asking. Personnally I think it's a home run without any changes (locks fine for me).:D

The difference between G10 vs CF in weigh is not so impressive:
G10 - 3.96 oz (112.5g)
CF - 3.92 oz (111.4g)
It is due to the fact that scale weight is small fraction of owerall knife weight.

So it is just looking different and I guess they have different termoemkost (do not know how it is in English) CF feels bit warmer then G10 in my hand.

It is quite interesting that BG-42 makes it way back to knife bussiness, after several years of CPM S30V euphoria. I also like to see SRS-15 Military and I really like to see orange G10 handled military - Rescue Military!

I am not sure if it is possible but will be nice to have folder out of that Russian Electro Slug Remelted and Vacuum Ark Remelted 110x18MSHD which should be similar to BG-42 as I understan in terms of being stainless ball bearing steel (with 20years warranty).

I also rememder something about CPM S125V. Was it about Military limted run?

Thanks, Vassili.

the only thing i desperately want changed is the locking mechanism. no liner, frame, or spine lock basically. i would consider most other locking mechanisms but am especially interested in the ball and compression locks.

steel choice is not a huge deel for me. however, i enjoy trying knives made of different steels and CPM S125V or bg42 seems like great alternatives to s30v, never had a knife made with either personally(currently my experience is limited to 440c/ats34/154cm/m2/s30v).

although i think carbon fiber is the best there is for true edc in the workplace (super smooth for pants, super light, much grippier than steel/titanium/aluminum and doesn't get cold), as a doctor the military is a bit large to carry to work and will be reserved for my off days or afterwork, therefore g10 is the way to go for me. i really really like the texture on the military's current g10 handles, that i would never change. much better than that on my 710hssr.

i would also like the military's relatively thin profile conserved. in the store it didn't feel any larger in my pocket than my 710hssr although next to each other it is clearly a much "larger" knife.

truth is i probably would have bought a 806 if the prices and availabitily weren't such and issue. hadn't been able to find a ruckus to check the handle of, and so figured i might just see if the knife i wanted in the first place had an ETA anytime in the near future....

After EDCing the ParaMilitary for the last couple months, I'd love to see a Compression lock version of the full-sized Millie. I feel VERY comfortable with the latest implementation of the Compression lock. It sure has evolved since my Salsa.

I'd also like to see the spine jimping changed back to the jimping used on the older Millies. That new jimping just doesn't cut it for me. It works okay, but looks like heck. The older style jimping worked well and looked SEXY!!!! I haven't purchased the latest incarnation of the Millie, just becuase I hate the new jimping.

I love the fact that the latest Millies have jimping on the finger choil.

S30V works great for me. I don't see much reason to change it.

A little more thickness at the tip of the blade would be nice. Not alot, but just a hair more to prevent accidental breakage.

I'd also like to see the pocket clip changed to the wire clip.

The lanyard hole could be more durable. I've had a lanyard hole rivet fall apart on me before.

I'd have to jump from a tall building if liners were ever added to the Military. The thinness and light weight are the reason I love the Millie.
