I just spent alot of money on the still available spring run in S90v/154 with carbon fiber. I've just fallen in love with the Manix line and this will be my 5th Manix.

Problem is that this one is suuuuper sticky and the ball bearing lock is clicking. I only have one fully lined Manix 2 to compare to and it's very different action. Checkout the video as i'm looking for some advice.

1. Should I send it in to Spyderco for warranty?

or

2. Is this something i can fix with a disassembly and reassembly. This video shows it all.

A second video is how I expected the action to be. Super smooth, free and quiet out of the box on my Manix2 51200.

One note: i backed out the pivot screws on both sides to where they were protruding significantly to show it's not a tight pivot, but perhaps a tight knife over all. Lubeing also didnt' help at all. Video was taken after lubing.

The Manix is similar to the PM2 in that if you tighten the stop pin screws too tight, they can affect the action. Try loosening the front backspacer screws a bit and see how it opens then. I've never dealt with a clicking BB lock though. Is it the spring or is it the ball bearing catching on something? Like the bottom of the backspacer.

Can't really tell where exactly the clicking is. It's in the bearing cage for sure. Let me loosen the backspacer screw and see what happens.

Is it new?

Or did you buy it on secondary market.

Did you take it apart?
Because it sounds like the cage is upside down.

Ok the backspacer screws was the culrit for the tight action but the caged bearing is still sticky and noisy. My 52100 is dead silent on both manual blade pull and when pulling bearing back. It's almost seems like the travel is greater on the s90v too. The bearing seems to have lockstick like on liner locks.

I wonder if you got a knife someone opened up and returned.
^^Different thread^^

Your choice on opening it or sending it back
or for warranty.
IMHO, it sounds like the cage is upside down.

I would open it up and check.

I second the vote to send it in. Not that I doubt your skill/experience. I myself have taken apart many knives and put them back together with no problems. But if I had your issue, I would just send it to the mothership. Mainly because if something is already broken, I’d be hard-pressed to say I didn’t do it. Unless of course it’ s an obvious flaw in manufacturing, in which case I’d be sending it in anyways. Their turn around time is only around two or theee weeks. I sent one in not too long ago, and am happy with the service I received. Got a phone call to discuss options, and an email when they shipped. Took two and a half weeks from the time it left my hands.

I think the safe bet might be sending in. First time using warranty. It's not like I don't have other options in the meantime.

Also then pivit screws we're not tight and didn't have locktite seal to break. Just free spinning. I think it was previously dissasembled. If Spyderco gives any pushback I'll take it up with gpknives.

After seeing the video, I got curious and took out mine and compared it to the KC cruwear sprint manix(smoothest manix I own). After doing the same thing you did in the video I can hear the composite manix spring is a bit.. "noisier", like the spring is super stiff and you can hear it compressing but nothing like yours the video.

I do get a minuscule amount of lock stick when closing the COMP knife but none when pulling the cage while closed like you did; just little metal spring sounds.

Composite is also BNIB, never been carried or played with much, never loosened pivots.

Cruwear has been disassembled, cleaned and carried so maybe the spring is just broken in because it was dead silent.

I thought it was just the spring being noisy.. but that popping at the end of the video, just from opening the knife is kind of bizarre..

Conclusion.. Manix's are finicky, They aren't like pm2's or military's, they've got springs, ball bearings, and tighter than average tolerances. One screw up and you'll be hearing clicking/ lock stick for the life of the knife.

Send it in, let them figure out whats wrong, and get a new different one.

I have a manix 2 cruwear that's exactly like that, clicks when you pull the lock, you can shake the blade loose and it will swing closed, so it's not as tight as yours. it's slowly getting better, I've carried it a lot lately, 35 minutes commute to work, I fiddle with it on my commute, see if I can get it to break in.

I have a manix 2 s30v, just like the second one, opens and closes with no issues or noises. It's a second, did not pass QC and it's smoother than my cruwear.

UPDATE!
Got back from warranty today. They called me to tell me last week they couldn't find anything wrong with it and that everything was in spec. I was a little puzzled so I just told em to send it back.

Well got it today and they definitely fixed something. The out of spec part might of been corrected simply by dissasembly and reassembly. The lock is quiet as a mouse now.

Video days it all. Turn sound up.
