UPDATE TO: A warning about the blade show

I started doing gun/knife shows locally about 14 years ago. The first few times I would take my knives home with me but must have just gotten lazy and just started throwing a sheet on them and just left. I have done many shows since including Blade and have never lost a thing either while the show was going on or after the show was closed down for the night. The only times I felt I got ripped off was either by the vending machines or the snack bar. I'm not saying thievery doesn't happen but I have never lost a thing at a show or in the process of coming or going. Make ugly knives and you can't even give them away. :D Since I have started doing shows I've heard of less than a half dozen incidents.

No dog in this hunt as I'm not a knifemaker. I do manage and direct large and small events in a variety of venues around the world. Sad to say the in house or event security is often the culprit when it comes to theft. They're only minimum wage and I doubt they're doing legitimate background checks on their employees. No excuses for scumbags but If I want to make sure something is still around the next morning after overnight security then we lock it up in it's own case and make it difficult if not impossible to wheel out. Or we take items back to our hotel rooms.

I hear ya, but just one problem could wipe a guy out.
You are right, man. But as pissed off as I would be if it had happened to me, I'd have to take partial responsibility for my own actions. I know suppliers can't haul all their stuff out each night, but they can at least have insurance in place to cover a lost. My knives are always insured, no matter where they are.

I agree it is a shame these things happen. I remember not too long ago, I didn't lock the doors on my house. I couldn't there were no locks on the doors. Now I have a knob lock, dead bolt and chain on every door. I also agree the Blade Show could supply better security. Now that I know the threat exists It can be planned for.

I have been involved in reptile shows in one capacity or another for over 13 years. Theft is so miniscule there. All organizers seem to have the same hard and fast rule. After the room is "swept" of inhabitants, the doors are locked with promoter and security chief present. The room is left empty and locked with only security outside the room. Nobody inside. I mean nobody.

These reptile shows have $40,000 snakes in 16oz potato salad containers. Something easily pocketed by a security guard. No losses to my knowledge. These snakes are unique and identifiable, yes, but so is Ed's knife.

Seems to me a change to similar procedure is in order at this show. But, I am just some lizard guy coating guns and knives, & selling knife sharpeners.

The guy who put his box of knives under the table with the chair on top at the show should have put a snake in the box. This may may have deterred any knives to go missing.

I am guy that had the box under the table. There where no knives in there it was a box of oosic and it would of been hard to tell if any was missing but if there was it was only a couple pieces. In years past I had left thousands of dollers worth of ivory on my table over night but after last year I was not going to take that chance. So this year I packed it in and out and took it to the room after hours and after the box being opened thursday night the oosic also was taken with me. I work hard for this stuff and could not afford to take a loss like others have had in year past. It is sad that it has come to this. Brett Mathews

I don't leave anything in the room Thursday night. That's when all the workers are in there laying carpet and getting it ready for the show. A lot less bodies in there the other two nights.
