I read this update to that cougar attack story that was mentioned on the forum recently. There was a response this morning by the man's daughter:

"...Jennifer said she doesn't know when her dad will leave hospital or whether he will ever walk alone down remote Island roads. But he has already said he wants a new knife.

I think he wants a different kind of a knife now. Something that you don't need two hands to open..."

Now's there's a man who deserves a more contemporary knife.

If someone wants to be the banker, I've got $5 USD to start the fund to buy this guy a knife courtesy BFC.

I was thinking a Spydie... too bad I got no money now.
This man does deserve a one hand opener.

Sounds like a GREAT idea. How could we get it to him?

Frankly, I'd guess Sal Glesser and others are rushing to mail the guy a free knife as we speak. What an unbelievable P.R. opportunity for makers of one-hand openers. I really hope Mr. Parker is able to make a full and complete recovery. Sounds like a great guy.

Maybe Spark can hold the money in escrow, we send it in and he can issue the guy a credit at 1SKS for whatever the kitty total is.

If Spark has a PayPal account I can pop $5 over right now.

Hey fella, there is no need for a fund, I will give him a xopy of the knife I carry every day. Our k-93C with General purpose blade of ATS-34 and I will put a Dozier style edge on it, guaranteed to go into a couger neck easy and go around in a circle.

Get me the address and I will send it as a gift so that he does not need to pay duty.

all the best, A. G.

A.G.,

That is very generous of you and it makes me respect you even more than from the good results which I have had ordering from your company.

This subject brings to mind my feelings on the question of what kind of knife I want in this kind of situation. My conclusion has long been that I would much rather have a fixed blade if I had to draw it during any kind of struggle like he had. Trying to draw and open a folder, even a great opening folder, presents too much possiblity of failure. Thus, when I am out in the woods or dessert, I try to carry both a sturdy fixed blade and a folder (for more detailed slicing). What do others think?

Good Job, dude...:D

That's interesting about Jennifer thinking his mistake was going for the knife, makes you wonder a bit.

"He thinks his biggest mistake was actually going for his knife. When he did that, he left his neck exposed and the cougar lunged. He had to throw his head in a way to protect his neck, which is when it bit him," Jennifer said.
Well I think it is a mistake because the knife isn't one hand opener, so he probably have to use both of his hands to open it, unable to protect his head and neck area. As soon as the cat saw that he would try to pounce because their instinct is to bite down on the throat area.
At least a one hander would leave him one arm to block the attack.
I don't really think that was a mistake, I don't think he would've survived with his bare hands.
Mr. Russell: Great to hear that you would send him a knife.
I wonder what he'll think when all of a sudden a bunch of people send him knives.

Calyth,

lol yeah. Seriously though, burtzolotar, I don't think the fellow had a knife on him because he was worried he'd be attacked by a cougar, the simple fact is folders tend to be easier to carry daily (particularly among sheeple), and the folder you have on you when you are under attack is far better than the fixed-blade cougar-killer you left at home because you couldn't carry it for some reason.

A knife in the hand is worth a better one in the drawer...

I must admit that I don't wear my FB at school because the amount of folders on me is probably enough to raise some eyebrows of the security. I know the school does not have specific policies about them, so I'm safe as long as I clip them to the pocket.
It's still pretty remarkable that Mr. Parker beat the cougar.

AG, you are a true gentleman. My offer still stands to defray the costs.

Here's what the article says:
"Jennifer Parker describes the injures to her father, David Parker, at a news conference at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on Wednesday. Parker, 61, a Port Alice resident, is in stable condition after surviving a cougar attack by killing it with a pocket knife"

I found the address for Royal Jubilee Hospital:
2101 Richmond Ave
Victoria, BC V8R 4R7

The article also says:
"David Parker, 61, of Port Alice on Vancouver Island is in stable condition after surviving a cougar attack by killing the cat with his pocket knife."

I don't know enough about finding someone in Canada to locate his home address in Port Alice online.

Perhaps this is it.
It seems like this is the only Parker in Port Alice and his name is Dave.
Don't all start sending knives. I'd suggest confirming it first.

Wow, you guys are amazing. I came back after work to see if there were any responses and I was overwhelmed. It makes me realize that there are still lots of compassionate and thoughtful people out there. Mr. Russell, you are a true gentleman.

BTW. I came across an old AG Russell catalog when I was 7 years old and ever since then, I was hooked on knives. Of course it took a number of years before I could buy my own knife. That was about 25 years ago now.

Great offer AG. Next time I am over that way to get my next toy, and harass Robert :) I will kick in my 5 bucks.

You,and anyone else for that matter, are welcome to come harass me (and buy knives) whenever they so please. ;)

AG,very generous offer, Im sure he will be pleased with the knife.
